My gunsmith son was in a hurry to make a small base die today for a 221 Fireball since he had just installed a barrel on a Remington action with a tight chamber. Sometimes you just need to improvise when you don't have the right piece of steel on hand....so he did. He had 2 old bolts laying around & used one of them to make the necessary SB die. The lock ring he already had on hand. Going to work on the old, rusted bolt he had the new, sort of, die made in no time & was sizing 221 FB brass, looks pretty good for an old rusted bolt. Dick

I don't believe I've heard the term uttered(typed) here before. "Making a Die". But from an old bolt, is REALLY neat ! Thanks for sharing.

Well done!!! WOW!! I wish my machine skills were of that caliber. I've made lots of different kinds of swaging dies but started with a 7/8 X 14 bolt so I didn't have to cut threads.

Having seen & handled some of his handiwork,, this die making didn't surprise me one bit. Another fine piece of equipment by him.

So the die was cut with the same reamer as the chamber? Genius

Not at all uncommon. Around here a man's wealth is gauged by the size of his scrap pile.
Can be fun to get any hardening and maintain dimension but still right doable. Many can do it, most won't bother.

Dick.... no doubt gladdens your heart to have such talent in the family. Likewise reckon the boys didn’t mind falling so close to the tree. David Bradshaw

Suggest you read the rules on decorum. David Bradshaw To say it's not uncommon to work from scrap is rude or sarcastic? It's a statement of fact. To say it's difficult to harden while maintaining dimension is rude or sarcastic? It's a description of a difficult but doable task. To say many can do but most won't bother. Simply outlines that he took the trouble. If that's rude and sarcastic around here you can keep the place to yourself. Adios
