Its because of recoil, the loading gate can bend forward into the empty chamber and break. But being the 83 should be carried with only 4 it brings up this quandary.

All I can tell you all is that I've shot MANY full house loads in my guns and never had a problem. As I mentioned earlier, the cylinder is supporting the loading gate due to the cylinder having recessed case heads. You should never have a problem with it bending a loading gate. Load it with four and carry on, quit worrying about it and go shoot the thing

Groo here The report was with high pressure loads 60k and above the pressure could travel back through the empty cylinder and hit the loading gate.. Most don't load to those pressures now, the deminstration load was something like 80k, used by the company president with out damage.. Loads we use now are not very high compared to the original. I loaded some that would come close to the 460 S&W out of the same barrel But would not use them in a Taurus or a Ruger...

Pull out one of your NM Ruger Blackhawks (unloaded)... Push on the loading gate and see what happens... Not good huh? It can do that same thing when the gun recoils.... Now, pull out an OM FT 44 or a FA and do the same thing....

I carry both my 83 and 97 fully loaded. The 83 between rounds. Don't like it, too bad.

Change in design or tolerances? the OM ruger's cylinder is recessed for the case heads.........this offers support for the loading gate in case an empty chamber happens to be under the loading gate when the revolver is fired. FA's have recessed cylinder feature as well. ~c.r.

"loading gate support"...
hummm, first time i've heard of this. am i to gather its only necessary with very stiff loads?
is this also necessary for traditional Colt-type SA (USFA, Turnbull, et al) when used with standard loads (ie: 250gr at 900fps)?
i've always just loaded 5 rds and left the 6th empty. is there any logic loading a spent case in the 6th chamber when shooting 45LC factory loads?

No just on the big guys, 475, 500 ect. It really isn't an issue with the FA or BFR both have recessed cylinders.
