I've taken my reloading journey over to the Reloading & Wildcats forum, but I did what I swore I wasn't going to do and bought a Lee press, auto primer, etc. I sold the cowboy tool for just the reasons you mentioned - no ability to resize the case, couldn't control where the bullet seated or the strength of the crimp.
It was a fun experience, but the modern press/dies offer so much more precision and control ... as everyone here already knew!

I've had pretty good success with my 1906 Colt SAA in 44-40 with 8 grs of Unique and a 200gr bullet. My chamber throats measure .428 and it shoots bullets sized to .429 the best. I also have found the RCBS Cowboy dies work well with cast bullets.
