I recently installed a RW grip frame using a Ruger Bisley hammer and trigger (it’s the merwin-hulbert frame). It’s a New Model Blackhawk in 45 Colt with a 7-1/2” barrel.
After install, the trigger is…..off.
During dry fire, it feels as though the trigger has to be held all the way back for just a second for the hammer to fall with no perceptible “break”. Occasionally, and not in any pattern, the hammer will fall when I start to release the trigger. Sometimes, it just feels like a good trigger. As far as I can tell, the hammer and trigger are factory spec. It didn’t do this before the grip frame swap.
If someone has a suggested starting point for this, I’m all ears.
Thanks.

Did you install the hammer and trigger new at the same time as the frame or were they already in the gun and working properly?

New at the same time.

Did you open up the back of the trigger opening in the grip frame? Ronnie leaves that oversized so you can file it down until the trigger reliably drops, then it acts as a trigger stop.
Variations in the pawl/ratchet I believe account for the trigger being intermittent. The fix is the trigger travel.

I did not! I assume you mean the slot that the trigger comes down through, not the trigger guard? That would be an easy fix and kind of makes sense. Thank you.

Well, that didn’t take much effort. I got it fixed up and working now, thanks for the tip.

I was having a similar issue on my colt style bisley frame Ronnie made for me. I am using powers custom hammer and trigger and the hammer wouldn't fall but I could push it with light thumb pressure. The cure was to relieve the trigger guard right behind the trigger. Now it has the perfect amount of over travel. Thanks to you guys for pointing me in the right direction. I was stuck in a forest for the trees moment. I probably would have figured it out on the second or third replacement pawl.

I'm fitting an aluminum PJ Jr now and ran into that. I'm trying my hand at contouring the trigger guard so it's not adding much time to the job.
