I’ve had one on my want list for a while. If I want a 4” barrel do I just need a 4” Model 29 donor barrel or do I need a 6” barrel so a ‘smith can set the b/c gap, etc?
Thanks!

Do you want a heavy barrel or slimmer profile barrel?

Good question and I really haven’t made up my mind. I think a heavy barrel would be the easy button but I’m open to both options right now.

The easy button would be to buy a model 24. If you go the conversion route a 4" barrel is fine to start with.

IIRC, THE BARREL STUB (THE BARREL THAT STICKS INTO THE CYLINDER FRAME) ON A 44 MAG BARREL WILL BE TOO SHORT TO REACH THE SHORTER N FRAME 357 MAG CYLINDERS.

All the more reason to find on original S&W in 44 special. If you don't mind stainless, I've seen some 624s with very attractive pricing.

awp101.... previous messengers have it doped. As noted, a .44 Mag barrel can be set back to meet the shorter Model 28 cylinder. This will shorten the extractor stroke. (Shortned stroke may completely extract .44 Special brass.) Conversion costs may notably exceed fetching a .44 Special in the first place. I probably wouldn’t mind a tapered barrel on a .44 Special; in .44 Mag, the original, untapered mag barrel wins my in my hand. If it turns out you find a M-29 4-inch and it is a better deal, shoot it as a .44 Special----with .44Special brass or, by DEEP SEATING .44 Special loads in .44 Mag brass. David Bradshaw

I wanted a thin tapered barrel on 41 Special I had built in a model 28 so I just had the factory barrel rebored. Cost is not prohibitive but the time may be.

Thanks everyone, learning has occurred.
I’m probably going to go with the really easy button of picking up a 22 or 624 but this is good info to have. I almost bought a converted 28 close to 20 years ago but it fell through and I’ve always kept the idea in the back of my mind. What brought it to the forefront recently was looking at some ugly 28s and wondering “Well if it’s getting refinished, what else can I do?”.
