My M97, also a gift from my wife on my 50th birthday, is a .357 and had a 4 1/4” barrel from the factory. I never shot the gun well and it mostly stayed in the safe. Last year I sent it back to FA and had a 9” barrel installed. This turned it into a totally different gun. I shoot it much better now with a longer barrel and red dot sight, and the .357 loads picked up enough fps to make it an effective whitetail cartridge without heavy recoil. This gun is the most accurate gun I have and is my favorite for several reasons.

Does that rare scope base have the sight blades with it?
I regret not buying one of those...

I’m in the camp with those who aren’t big fans of the grip frame shape. I’ve had a stock 44 Special and a Bowen built 327/32 with a much more Colt-like grip frame. I much prefer (and still have) the modified gripframe.

I guess I'm in the middle, not "love/hate" relationship, but not pure love. For me it's like a snubby or a scandium revolver, great to carry, not great to shoot. I love what it is, but it doesn't love me back.

I knew I would only have one chance to own a Model 97 so I got a 44 special with a 5 1/2" barrel, black mircarta grips and trigger job. I really like it.

My 5.5” .45 Colt 97 has become my favorite revolver to carry in the backcountry as well as to shoot.

Tim forgive me, I thought that gun belonged to someone else. THOSE are the snakewoods of legend.

Another Fan here...
Have had ten and still have six...with one more possibly coming in...
The three shorties all had round butts... .327, .45 and .41 Magnum. The rest have been square with 5.5" barrels except for the .224-.32 that is a 7.5 octagon.
The shorties are very unforgiving...mess up your squeeze or followthough at all and it is a miss...but still my favorites...

I agree Bob. Find the 5.5" guns are much easier to shoot with an action job and overtravel screw...
