I just got back a modified Siamese Mauser barreled action from my folks place. My brother found it up in the attic, where I placed it years ago. He also found the walnut sporter stock I planned to fit to it.
Now, the decision is, do I build it or do I sell it. At 70, it would still be fun to build but I have evolved to other, better cartridges. Or, it might rekindle my fondness for the small bore -70.

I’d like to have one chambered in 50 Alaskan but don’t have the skill or knowledge to accomplish that. Lee’s article on the conversion is what created the desire!
Enjoy the rifle! Tim

Interesting article. I appreciate the 50-70 more than the 45-70. I might look to going that way.

You might want to look at some of the more useable conversions too. The 33 Winchester, gives about 338/06 ballistics and is very easy to form from 45-70 brass. Gives you a nice 300 yard rifle useable for deer and antelope where you can use it much more than a big bore. Another round that has given me good service is the 38-56 Winchester. Great cast bullet round, and again, not so far off from the .375 Whelen, about equivalent to a 9.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer, perhaps a bit more actually. With the 235 gr. Speer, a good everyday using rifle as well. Of course the 7.62 x54R is a near perfect choice, feeds smoothly and doesn't require a lot of bolt mods. 150 gr. at 2800 fps does a lot too. Only problem today is getting good European brass since PPU doesn't export anymore. Lots of fun to be had with the old Siamese.

Good ideas, but, it already is wearing an E R Shaw barrel cut for the 45-70. Back in the 80s, before I knew anything, I liked the 45-70. I have since found I prefer the 50-70 for a large bore and the 405 WCF for a medium more. Neither of which were an option when I had this one converted and barreled. Perhaps, it is time to sell this one and concentrate on some others. Kevin
