Like a 338 discipline you are I am a 7mm discipline. My favorite whitetail deer round is my 7mm08 on a SAKO Mannlicher Carbine. Wonderful rifle and fantastic round . Wow. Have not seen many Sako Mannlicher rifles. I have one in 375 H&H. From the 50s. So a Mauser action I love them. Would like one in 7-08 I've actually had three. First one was a 7x57 made especially for my Esau Verho who was a big wig with SAKO back in the day. It was special because SAKO wasn't importing that caliber in the states then. He actually had it made up for me at the SAKO factory and he shipped it to me as I had my FFL license back the. The next one was in 30-06, and the last one of course in 7mm-08. My best friend has one in 375 H&H like you do.

I had a Sako Mannlicher .243 for a while. It was a good gun but a little heavy Must have been the older style like my 06 was. My 7mm-08 barely weighs over 7.5 lbs with scope, sling, and five rounds. Holding the pistol grip I can carry it pointing down and the muzzle doesn't get anywhere near touching the ground. It also has an offset stock for a right hander and a palm swell. Truly my favorite rifle.

My brother has an Armalite AR10B in 338 Federal. Seems like a heck of a cartridge for being a short action length. I never had the need for a round that is more capable than the 308 or 30-06.

Talk about heck of a cartridge for being a short action, my friend Arne Brennan who speak a lot about on this forum for being instrumental for the development of the 6.5 Grendel has another cartridge he fully designed himself called the .375 Raptor. Basically a slighte shortened 308 necked up to .375. It's a beast! Taken all kind of big game in it's short span. Read about it here: blackcollararms.com/375raptor/

I built a "Baby" 338 for a customer shortly after Mr Bell's article on it came out in Gun Digest. It came out so nice that I made myself one on a Mauser action I had around. I really enjoyed that rifle for a couple years (My brother still does!) When the 338 federal came out I made a couple of rifles and 1 XP-100 for a couple folks, then the fervor died off. I did have a couple factory rifles come into the shop with owners complaining of misfires with factory ammo. It seems that minimum ammo amd a close to max chamber allowed a round to get pushed far enough forward by the pin to not Fire. Sometimes a second try would work. Sometimes it took 3-4 four tries. Disconcerting in a hunting rig to say the least! Once fired and properly sized cases were no issue. I saw this same thing when the 35 Whelen came out as a factory round - In fact i own a Ruger77 that was guilty of this with new/factory ammo/brass. Maybe others expereinced this and it led to some of the unpopularity as well? Anyway I now have a nifty 338-08 AI reamer in the shop as well as the standard. This was for a personal gun - I have not done one for a customer yet. I do not know if there is any real performance gain - I was not looking for a gain. But there is a REALLY nice sharp shoulder and very positive headspace now!

I had a 338 Federal built around 2018. Built mine on a Remington 788 in 7-08 that had a LOT of headspace issues from the factory. The problem was finding bullets that were meant to expand at impact speeds. Inside 100 yards was no problem. It was when the bullets hit at 250 to 300 yards. They pencil right through. Found this out the hard way. I called Sierra, Hornady, Speer and all of them confirmed this. That was some time ago, so maybe new bullets are out there that I am not aware of. I shelved the rifle in 2020. 338-06 was no problem getting the right impact velocity if shots were under 300 yards. The little -08 case just couldn't get there at that time and no one was making factory ammo then. Even Federal ammo was scarce as hens teeth.

My buddy that had one built on one of the first Model Sevens is gone now. And it will bug me that I didn’t ask. And the guy that probably got the rifle is gone too. Maybe there is an article he wrote when he built it. Gun Digest guy Bob Bell. Maybe in the mid 80s Gun Digest. 338-08 A quick edit Ken Waters in Pet Loads And in Wildcat Cartridges II

338 RPM seems like it splits the difference between the 338-06 and the .338 win mag. I don't do breaks and the mag is to hard on my beat up old carcus. I might warm up to a break though. ...tj Just go all out and get a suppressor!

In fact they change the recoil pulse all together and cause it to hit you harder due to slower gas release. I’ve had several take guns nearly hit me after putting a can on them because I’m used to holding them a certain way without a can attached.

He was a cohort in crime of Phil Sharpe…….along with Al Wardrup(gun builder and shooter at Williamsport 1000 yard range) who worked with Ackley. I hid in a corner and listened……..
