I need to start by saying I can only afford 1.so good old John and his buy them all strategy would sink my retirement plans deep. All 3 are S&W 44 magnums. And the prices are close enough to be a non factor. 1 recent 629 classic 3 inch. A very cool gun. I would load 240 grain HPs under 7.5 to 9 garains. Of Unique and have a bad ass Carry gun that is very cool. #2 is a 629 Classic -6 -5 inch full lug. Cool and I think I could shoot it well. And could carry it in a vertical shoulder Holster too. 3 is a 29-2 8 3/8ths. Witch is about 85% shape. Typical bluing loss at the muzzle. I am leaning towards #2. The damn Key lock is a drag. But I just think it is the most usfull of the trio...your thoughts please...tj

I'd also choose #2. I'm a sucker for those S&W 5" Revolvers...

I have a 5" in a model 27 and so agree with Encore64, that they are hard to beat. Loaded with 44sp would be a sweet deal.

I too would go with the 5” 629. Goldilocks barrel length for the N-frame.

I vote #2 since I’m in the “because 5 inch” camp

I also would choose #2, as I see the 5” barrel giving much more performance than the 3” as well as shootability, and more portable than the 8”.

That 3” makes a great woods and field gun, mine is accurate with a similar load to what you, mentioned, a 240swc at 975fps. Easy shooting, accurate and great as a comforting last thought before going to sleep when camping in a tent out west. I have hunted it and taken deer and hogs out to 50 with no issues. The bigger guns are generally easy to find, the little ones most don’t want to turn loose of them once they realize just how good they are.

I bought the 5 inch. It will be 5 or 6 days before I can bring it home. Looking forward to dropping my pin gauges through the chambers. I know the Cylinder gap is tight. I could not see through it!...tj

5" 629 Classic. I owned one for 20 years and foolishly let it get away, to a friend.

I certainly can't predict which would best suit you but I can tell you that I have a 3" 629, and it carries well in a good strong side highrise holster. It has enough heft to be enjoyable to shoot, while not being overly burdensome on the belt.
They are all good choices.

Great choice....
Picked up a -5 last summer at a local shop...was made in 2001 and was still the pre-IL...got it home and looked close...only had the three smudge rings on every other chamber on the cylinder face...
So is it home yet??
Try a Simply Rugged Pancake holster...very comfortable to carry...of try the Chesty Puller straps..
