I thought this one was interesting. A lot of us like to see examples of performance. This was from Andy Larson of Skinner sights. This is further testament to me that people need to pay a lot more attention to bullet construction as opposed to just horsepower. I'm not second-guessing him at all. This is just more about where I've seen people think that any particular cartridge off the shelf will perform. Most people have zero understanding of the bullet that it is loaded with. And that alone can change the entire dynamic of the package deal. On one hand I'm a bit surprised at the result with that 400 grain bullet. But on the other hand not entirely surprised. I wrote elsewhere on this forum where I shot a doe basically at point blank with a sabot shotgun slug and the slug never left that deer's skull. Part of me wonders if he had shot it with a lower power load and the same bullet - would it have had significantly better penetration?

An upper big bear fang, would be a lot for any lead containing bullet to hold up too... a copper solid, may have faired better, but also may have deflected & not performed as well...
BTW... I'm a huge 45-70 fan, but not a fan, of the 350's I usually use 405 Jacketed myself

The 350 Speer is designed for 458wm and is my do it all bullet for my 45-70. It has a much thicker jacket than the 400speer. I agree though, 2000fps and popping the action open is a bit much.

“That was the first one I’d shot” ? Carrying a weapon in bear country for protection with a load never fired before doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. Dan

That 400gr Speer is a very soft bullet, probably designed with commercial trapdoor level loads in mind. A friend used that bullet with great results on deer at 1500fps, expanded beautifully and knocked them down fast. Definitely NOT a bullet for things that bite back.
