I ordered Altamont grips for my 625-9 Mountain Gun 5 weeks ago, finally got them in. The material (bonded ivory) is very dense and the fit was…okay. After cutting 3/8” off the bottom of the grips and some judicious sanding to smooth up the edges and corners, they fit my hand great! If anybody welded round butts to square butts, I would get some stag magma type grips for this gun, but I’m not sure if that’s done. Anyway, here are some pics.

Once, before prices exploded, maybe late 80s, my father wanted a round but version of his S&W, I don't remember the exact model now. He bought round but panels, and took the grip frame down by hand on his pedestal grinder. I think a 6" craftsman. The backstrap lacked most of the milled lines down the back and with just cold blue applied it looked a little butch. But ilhe was happy and it looked better than I thought it would when he started.
It can be done

It can be done I guess my process would consist of someone tigging oversize onto the round butt and then filing it down to profile of a standard square butt frame.

I have several round butt N frames. Here is what I did to give me a square butt revolver. It might be hard to see but in the second image I have added a slice of antler to fill in where the square backstrap should be. This will give you an idea, in wood. That little sliver makes a big difference! Kevin

I have enough antler on hand here that I could form that out myself after getting some stags I like. In the meantime these altamonts work okay. I may have to sand the portion behind the trigger guard as it keeps me feeling like I’m not “up and into” my grip enough.

They took 4 weeks to ship so I was going to be pretty upset that newly produced “just for me” grips were messed up if they were. I’m not totally in love with these, but they are better than the hogue’s for my purposes. The search for perfection continues…

Another update on the mountain gun, I got the holster finished up today. I started this holster a week before the baby was born on February 12th, it’s been sitting there undisturbed ever since..for good reasons! I was able to sneak in some time this weekend to finish it up and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I got the general design from Bill Jordan’s book, no second place winners. This was my first “lined” holster, and believe me it’s tough to stitch through 4 full layers of leather with my meager tools. However I love the rigidity that it added and am glad I did it. I wasn’t sure if I would need a retention strap or not, but after water forming the holster I believe it does. Easily added as I’ve already marked the holes for a “single action” style hammer thong that can be pulled down and out of the way when not desired.
