For those of you who carry afield where critters might eat you, what is the maximum barrel length you feel comfortable carrying?

Mine is a 45 colt Bisquero with a 4 5/8 barrel. I kept it short on purpose for easy draw and to keep it small while navigating brush while hunting.

My belt holster or chest rig guns carried as back up or defense are 3”, 3.75”, 4”, and 5”. The 3” and 5” are both DA guns, the 3.75” and 4” are SA guns.

4-3/4" Blackhawk 45C, 5" Redhawk 500L, 5-1/2" BFR 500L in bear country.
4" Service Six 357,5" 1911 10mm in cougar/pig/gator country.

For me it's about mobility and utility. I have 2 3.5" revolvers, quite a few in the 4 5/8" range to 5 1/2". For me I wouldn't carry longer than 6" for backup. Mine are carried in a crossdraw belt or chest holster which also lends itself to shorter barrels as well (my preference).

I MOSTLY CARRY 5.5" REVOLVERS REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION.

4” octagon 45 colt bisley vaquero, round butted, built for me by JRH. Sights regulated to shoot miha 280 grain lead, 13 gr HS6, to point of aim at 50 yds. Will handle anything i will run into in SE Texas.

Even with rubber grips that 41 can't be fun to shoot, but when REALLY needed recoil is the last thing on your mind.
Ounces equal pounds at the end of day in the mountains and thick bush.

I was lucky to find one.....There`s one on GB with a starting bid of $2,295.00.... crazy.... Also have a four inch .41 mag Taurus Tracker in stainless that`s pretty easy to carry and there are a few of them in titanium that are super light..... The barrel ports really help...  |

For the last 50 years, 5 1/2 in. SA. In DA I have a 696 that were all 3 inch that I really like.

PS- now that I`am older the weight of the belt gun gets lighter and I wound up trading for a lightweight S&W titanium 41, m-357....this gun is LIGHT and I changed the grip to the same rubber recoil absorber as they use on their 460/500. It helps......jpg?width=590&height=590&fit=bounds)
