As expected, my partner and I didn't draw New Mexico so we are on to our back up plan. Right now we are leaning towards doing a drop camp hunt somewhere in western Colorado with handguns. We've done these before and had everything from a phenomenal experience to a borderline scam.
I'm not asking for honey holes. What I'm looking for is potential outfitters that you know and trust that offer a drop camp hunt in this part of the state.
Typically what we've experienced is an outfitter that takes you 5-10 miles deep, to one of their locations and provide tent, cook stove, etc. We bring our hunting gear, food, bed roll, and a great attitude. Price has usually been around $2500 per person. So, this is what I've got in my head but again, we are open to just about anything except the price of a fully guided hunt.
Specific geographical location is not important - we'll go anywhere. Elk quality - also not important; we are more interested in a great experience and would prefer higher concentration of animals vs. trophy bulls.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Our experience with elk in Western Colorado has been dismal at best, as far as quantity of animals, since 2017, finding a good outfitter shouldn't be a problem, finding the elk is the challenge, dad went twice last year, archery, north, and south Western, very little signs of elk, good luck

Try J-Bar-H outfitters out of Meeker, Colorado. I had a great experience with them. Didn't get an animal, but had a blast anyway. www.jbarhoutfitters.com/Greg

Gotta gloat a little…
No help in CO but I did draw both bull elk and deer muzzleloader tags here in NM….back to back 5 miles from home.

Congratulations Bushog. Rem and Ashly move back to NM next month and he told me yesterday he drew rifle elk, archery antelope and archery Barbary sheep! May be in NM this fall tagging along.

Actually, I need to clarify that I had a blast elk hunting with J Bar H.....I had to ride a horse for hours going to the drop camp, and hours leaving the drop camp. I'm a big guy, and they put me on a draft horse named Bertha. Not sure how many hands tall she was, but I'm 6'4 in hunting boots and her back was even with the top of my head. I had to use a step box to get on that flippin horse. Also, I don't like to ride horses. Other than that, I had a blast.

Well, the sons NM elk hunt may or may not happen. Both sets of parents are out here to work on house projects and celebrate the grandsons second birthday. He came from his bath last night with a shirt one that said “Big Bro” which was their way of telling us we are going to have another grandchild right in the middle of elk season!😄
That was last night. Today they found out we will be getting our first granddaughter! Life is so good!
