linkMY Compadre AND LIFE LONG CLOSE FRIEND JIM PERRIN RECENTLY GOT INTO COLLECTING S&W BREAK OPEN (LARGE CALIBER) REVOLVERS. HE BOUGHT THE ABOVE GUN OUT OF AN AUCTION HOUSE BECAUSE OF ITS LOW SERIAL NUMBER (2 DIGIT) AND ALTHOUGH SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY circa 1878 IT IS IN GREAT SHAPE. AFTER HE GOT THE GUN HE STARTED INVESTIGATING ITS HISTORY AND GOT A "LETTER". THE GUN WAS SHIPPED FROM S&W TO "TEXAS JACK" IN 1878. TEXAS JACK WAS A WELL KNOWN CHARACTER POST CIVIL WAR WHO DIED OF PNEUMOIA IN 1880. BOOKS AND DIME NOVELS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT HIM AND WIKEPEDIA HAS A LENGTHY BIO ON HIM. THINKING THAT WITH THE PROVENANCE TO A FAMOUS PERSON THE GUN IS WORTH QUITE A BIT MORE THAN WHAT JIM PAID FOR IT. NOTE THE "DIAMOND" AROUND THE GRIP SCREW HOLE, BY THE TIME S&W DISCONTINUED THE "DIAMOND" IT HAD BEEN IN USE FOR AROUND 100 YEARS.

Matt I'd rather read about Texas Jack Omohundro than Bill Cody or Hickock. He outshined both of his contemporaries, at least in my amateur estimation. That guy lived two lifetimes in his short 30(ish) years. I always wonder about the guns he lost in his bar fire. Congrats, Rey. I'm really glad you're the guy who got a hold of that pistol.

Quite the circle of circumstances being drawn here. Add in a beautiful gun to someone who appreciates it, oh my.

TO CLARIFY, IT IS NOT MY GUN BUT THAT OF MY Compadre JIM PERRIN. WE WERE AT A GET TOGETHER OF LONGTIME FRIENDS AT MY Lenaderos HUNTING LEASE AND JIM BROUGHT THE GUN TO SHOW TO ME. WONDER WHERE IT WENT BETWEEN 1880 AND 2024? LOOKS LIKE IT WAS WELL CARED FOR AND HARDLY USED.

Normally I'm in the "use it ! " camp. In this case is there a currently available clone ? A stand in piece ?

THAT GUN WAS SHIPPED TO TEXAS JACK WITH A TWIN, ALSO A 2 DIGIT REVOLVER, AND NOW THE SEARCH HAS BEGUN FOR THE 2nd GUN.
