This one just arrived today. Started life as a factory 30-30 WCF. Chamber was plenty tight, so building my long desired Ruger #1 in an Ackley Improved seemed a no brainer to rechamber.
Barreled action was shipped to Huntington. He'd done my Henry 30-30 Ackley and it was like a factory gun.
If possible, this one is even better.
Ruger #1 Work isn't for everyone and there's few I'd let touch mine.
Jack rechambered and left it looking bright and shiny. No reamer marks to be found.
Then his engraving guy simply, but professionally, remarked the gun.
With a 22" barrel, my Henry gives me 2600+ fps with a 150 grn SST Bullet. Throat is longer in the Ruger, so a little more is likely.
More on this one and pictures later...

Sounds like what Old World hunters would call a Stalking rifle. To me a single shot should only be available in a rimmed round.

Well, I have quite a few Ruger #1s in Rimless Cartridges, but I have to agree.
This is a #K1A and very lightweight. Less than a Marlin 20" 30-30 WCF. So, a Stalking Rifle it is.

Well It has seemed to me that if you are playing around in the area of high pressure ( 50k+) it would seem an action like a # 1 and a rimmed cartridge is a help, My only time i have had a round blow out was at much lower pressures (says who). It was a 223 Rem loaded at gas gun pressures (hopefully) in a ruger mark2 ,A busted stock , tiny bits of brass coming out of your face for the next several years is enough to reenforce all the safety things you go through. I still have that eye, but remember when you take that hot load out on the back 40 you most likely do not have shooting glasses or ear muffs on, stay safe. Have a nice day Don K.

Trust me...I get it but what about just buying a .30-40 Krag? (unfortunately I can't find a .30-30 #1 and it's not because I haven't been trying)

Well: Odd, when I was on the phone with the guys at Deweys about shipping. I asked if they had any other # 1 Rugers , they said no but they where working a deal for #1 in 30-30 Ackley Improved. Have a nice day Don K.

As always, there's several cartridges that will mimic each other.
The 30-30 Ackley Improved in a solid, strong action pretty much duplicate the 300 Savage, 30-40 Krag and 303 British.
But, I've always been a P.O. Ackley Fan and the 30-30 Ackley is the most efficient of the lot. Also, the easiest to find brass for.
This was my third rifle in 30-30 Ackley and likely my last.
The #1 is working well and I'll report more on it in time.

You already know what's often said around here: "Without pictures, it didn't happen"

I've only ever found one "problem" with the 30-30 Ackley Improved.
On this one, the shoulder is actually moved forward and Improved. Whereas, some are simply Improved.
I've fireformed loads which removed taper and formed a perfect shoulder, but too far back. This validates what Ackley said about minimizing backthrust.
The cartridge doesn't push back solidly against the breech since this one headspaces on the rim.
Problem is simply solved by seating cast bullets to firmly seat against the rifling lands and fired by 10.0 Unique. This produces perfectly formed cases with long life.
J.D. Jones recommended this method for many of his Wildcats that moved the shoulder forward...
