Hi,
Has anyone had any experience with the slick coat .459 295 gr HP from Hunters Supply in their 45-70's?
I was looking at another option for a HP that is a hard cast.
When I called they stated is can be driven at 2000 fps without an issue. I was more concerned with accuracy.
Id be running them in my 1895 Marlin SBL.

I liked their green lube. Shot a bunch of the .452 275 in 45 colt and +p 45acp with Bluedot... I have not tried the Slick Coat, but would also like to hear how it works.

Hunters supply bullets are hard. Very hard. I got some 115gr penta hp .358" from them that measured 28bhn. Some 250gr rnfp .452" measured 26bhn.

Reach out to Sixshot or a few others on here and buy from them. They know what works. Often commercial casters cast too hard and use extra hard lube to avoid damage when they bulk package by just dumping the bullets loose into a box.

^^^^^^^^ Very good advice. Hard cast IS NOT the way to go.

I will definitely reach out to Sixshot, I am always up for trying out others boolits.
As an aside, I did reach out to Hunters Supply and asked about expansion velocities. I got am email response that it will expand reliably down to 1200 fps for What its worth.

I've shot them from 750 to 1800. If by expand they meant crack an beginning to fracture, that started at about 1450fps. The noses would break off at 1600, but I would get an exit on pigs with the 45. The 357 didn't fair so well. Maybe they are using a less brittle alloy now.
From the 45-70, I really like 16:1 lead/tin for hp loads from the Marlin. Opens nice and retains good weight. About 14bhn. I powder coat them, and since I never got a push through in that size, I still lube them with lbt blue soft when I size them in the old 450, but that's probably not necessary.

Much thanks
I reached out to Sixshot via PM about buying some from him to try

Is there a formal way to test a bullets hardness? I ask because I have a few of the Hunters Supply on hand and was wondering, like a few have said, if they changed their hardness with the newer slick coat.
I tool one, wacked it with a hammer and it flattened out like a pancake. I know thats not a standard but is it an indicator?
Thanks in advance

I use an LBT hardness tester. Hopefully they will become available again.
