The S&W Triple Lock and the Croft M2 barrels look pretty thin in the photos I've seen. They're both .45 Colt but I figure that the pressures are in the same ballpark as .44 Special.
Say you're starting with a NM Ruger SBH .44 Mag barrel. There sure looks like there's a lot of extra meat on there. How far could you safely cut one down to reduce weight for a .44 Special ? Is there a way to calculate this? Or a rule of thumb?

Uh oh, metallurgy. My Charter Arms Bulldog 44 spec., well they did not waste any metal there, but enough. Tough line to draw. No specific advice, but alloy needs to be matched if using others barrel dimensions for a guide.

I'm not trying to squeeze out the safety margin, just trim the fat. Maybe somebody has already done this and can take a measurement? Pretty sure I've seen a Croft copy posted here before. |

If you just want it lighter I'd suggest, instead of making the barrel pencil thin maybe look into fluting the barrel. You could run straight flutes and skip the area under the ERH, or I might go with flutes on a 30degree spiral, without regard to the ERH except to consider the mount screw needs to be in an uncut area. There are a lot of areas that material can be removed on a blackhawk safely.

This isn't my line of work, and I'm not going to draw any conclusions here. Just thought I'd toss out something that I thought was possibly useful. |

They can get pretty thin.
Look how thin the inner barrel sleeves are on the S&W model 69.
No support just in front of the threads for that barrel

That TGW/RW goes 34oz ? Just went to basement for my info, my NM Vaq Sheriff 44spec goes 39 oz.. An aluminum grip frame would take it too ? Somebody else has taken S.A weights lower...Firefly ? Does that name sound right ? Rough night at work, slept poorly...
