I know the short answer is to buy a Lipsey special. Too easy.
Numrich has nickel 38-40 SAA bbls and cylinders. I am assuming they are 3rd gen. Any problems fitting them to a Second gen SAA frame? Seems like I read the bbl threading was different.
Is there a source for .40 cal Ruger bbls/cyls? Lol
If I hit the lottery, is a 38-40 Single Five possible.
How much can the ERH be shortened on a Ruger/ Colt?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Find a 10mm blackhawk, Borchardt Rifles can make you a 38-40 cylinder I believe.

If you want a SAA, just buy a Uberti...
If you want to build on a Blackhawk, start with a 30 Carbine or 10mm/40 S&W Blackhawk.
If by Single Five you're referring to building on a Single Six Frame, that's a no-go right out of the gate.
The rim of a 38-40 is larger than a 45 Colt or 44 Magnum...

I'm not against the Uberti idea, just never have seen one. I'll dig deeper.

Can usually find them in 5-1/2" and 7-1/2" As far as the ruger ERH the Sheriff's model had 3-3/4" barrels and shortened cylinder base pin for added stroke. 38 special is the largest rimmed you can fit in the NM Single Six, the 10mm works because it's the same size as the 38 rim. 41's have been built on the OM Single Six. If anyone knows otherwise please correct me. Limited knowledge base here.

I want to say on the third generation Colt single action that Colt changed to cylinder pin much like Rugers, that is the previous generation had a two piece system. I large pin, or if you will a bushing, went in the cylinder first, then the smaller diameter pin went throught the frame and that bushing, and rear part of the frame. I'm not sure which generation they changed to just the pin. I never could figure why Colt had two pieces on the earlier guns and if anyone knows I'd like to hear it.

Just a guess, but wonder if it involves the arbors from the blackpowder frames?

2nd & 3rd generation Colts have different barrel threads and are not interchangeable. 1st, 2nd and later 3rd gen Colts have a removable cylinder pin bushing, but early 3rd gens do not. This bothers some Colt junkies but makes no difference for practical purposes.

I had my lgs do some fishing for me. He found the the last 4 3/4 38 wcf Cimarron Model P that his distributor had in stock. Might be here today. AND to get free shipping, he added one in 32-20. I feel a layaway coming on.

My wife has a pair of 38-40’s from Cimarron. Her’s are Ubertis. Fantastic pair of revolvers. She did have action jobs done on them. Hope yours turns out as well. I imagine it will.

Find a Ruger Buckeye Special or a Ruger Vaquero Convertible. I have both. The Buckeye is a convertible also 38/40 & 10mm. The Vaquero is 38/40 & 40 S&W. I often forget I also have a Colt SAA in 38/40, unturned to this day. Too pretty, I shoot the Vaquero. I had intended to gift the Colt to my grandson, but his mother has gone to the dark side after getting her Master's Degree. Grandson might get it yet if I live long enough to see him become a conservative adult.
