Good morning all. I have been enjoying shooting my 405 Winchester A LOT! I have even tried out a couple rounds of new production ammunition from Hornady. Thank God they didn't do the gummy bullet thing. I am loading middle of the road ammo because I am not going after Rhino and I doubt anything in S. Texas will stand up to the caliber anyway (unless I get to go Nilgi hunting, that might do it.). I have two issues though. 1. The factory front sight is WAY high. I am at the highest notch on the rear sight ladder and still need another higher notch. The rear sight is so elevated I am worried it is going to take a set and I will never get it back down. 2. I need a new mold. My heaviest 41 Magnum mold is 250 grains and I am looking for 300 or heavier. Any suggestions? Got a used one to sell? Factory ammo and most common load data stays around 300 grains. Thinking there must be a reason I would probably want to stay around that. My lead is straight clip on WWs, powder coated and water quenched both out of the mold and after powder coating. Hammer smash test passed with flying colors. (Pun intended.)
I do plan on hunting with it this coming season at short range (under 150 yards) "if" I can get a load worked up for it. I love how sexy the rifle is and love the recoil. Makes me think of Teddy going through Africa and taking some game with it. I dont know that I am nuts enough to try it on Rhino, but any pig in Texas is welcome for dinner.
All opinions, suggestions, thread drifts etc. wanted.

If you end up looking at a new front sight there might be something here to look at. Don't know if their stuff will work for you or not, but I have their sights on two of my rifles and I have been very pleased with them. www.newenglandcustomgun.com/products.php?cat=337

Unfortunately NECG doesn't seem to catalog a dovetailed front sight. I will keep poking around though. Does anyone know what size dovetail Winchester used on the High Wall?

Lee Martin's 290 LFN might be of interest - singleactions.proboards.com/thread/15112/405-win-290-martin-lfnIf cut for linotype, like Lee's, it'll probably run a bit heavier in your alloy. I know my Martin 475 cal. LFN is closer to 460 grains in my alloy than the designated 445 grains. In a previous life the Martin designs were cut by Mountain Molds, but the 290 is now available through Accurate...

Don’t know for sure but most dovetail US sights are a standard .375 dovetail. Williams or Skinner would be where I’d look.

Of possible interest, the 24hourcampfire.com has a subheading for lever actions. Within that, is a further recently added subheading for 405 Winchester. That may help you with bullets, brass, molds and sights.

I did not see a levergun / lever action forum. I looked under Bigbores and also under Express Rifles. I did not locate anything.

My 290 gr LFN has shot well in my .405 Ruger No. 1. If you order the mold, you'll want them to drop 0.413 -0.414" and size to 0.412". -Lee www.singleactions.com "Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I have an NOE 413-251 that shoots great in my 1895 with IMR4198. I'm pushing just shy of 2000fps with Carnauba Blue and don't get any leading or fouling at all. I shot a Hog with my 405/1895, it fell over...
That 290gn Martin looks very tempting...
