I have never cared for the various sprays, for bears or humans. Lets not get into that. In the interest of looking under every rock, I revisited the spray thing. Apparently there are gel based sprays now. They seem to go good distance, and a level of wind resistance is better. UV marking left behind too. As a bare minimum...sprays now deserve a second look. Liked what I saw in latest Sportsmans Guide catalog that's in my "library".

Didn't read all the replies but having been a long time runner and having had several girlfriends who also ran, the only gun to have is a Keltec P32...
With the pocket clip it can go right inside the shorts with no holster or bulk...
I don't run any longer but when I "can't" have a gun on me one of these is on me....

Contender nailed it early on, YOU cannot pick the gun, as much as you’d like to surprise her or do it for her you can’t. Take her somewhere she can try several, have her wear her running gear and try it out. Jumping jacks, short burst runs, whatever while at the store, but let her decide. Those that have suggested Lt.Wgt. Revolvers in 22wmr (not mini) are probably on the right track but again we are men and we cannot make the final choice.

The NAA Black Widow is a larger handgun than the mini. More grip to hold onto and still extremely light. Stainless to have more protection from water and sweat. I carry one daily as a backup, and often as a primary for various reasons.

The S&W M&P Bodyguard .38spl +p is a nice, little, lightweight (14.2oz empty). With the correct holster or backpack, she’s easily forget it was there. It’ll fit in my front pocket easily, the one I have has a pretty nice DAO trigger pull.
The small grip is a challenge for my wife with +p loads but no problem with normal pressure .38spl ammo

I have an LCP 380 that has been very reliable and accurate. It is also light weight and flat. I second the suggestion of a knife too. I like the CRKT Minimalist SPEW and the new CRKT Spear Point. Fastened to the inside bottom of her vest or where ever she likes with just the attached cord hanging down. Easy to get to light and secure in the hand will definitely make someone GET Off!

I am going to offer a different track, I apologize if this veers off-topic…. Carrying a concealed pistol in any manner that would be accessible while training for/competing in one of the most difficult endurance sports in existence, is a tall order. I would suggest paying for classes in Brazilian JuJitsu and some limited kickboxing/Thai Boxing, a small fixed blade like the Clinch Pick or Tops “Unzipper”, and a class or two from someone like Craig Douglas or Cecil Burch on the close quarter employment of small fixed blades. A pistol is great, but it’s an uncomfortable option over miles and miles of serious endurance training. There really isn’t any getting around that. Maybe making her, personally, very dangerous would be an acceptable alternative? The right combination of skill and a small, sturdy edged weapon may help overcome the very real size/strength advantage of a male attacker.

You read about a lot of attacks, I've yet to read about one where the victim wished they would have had a smaller gun. You have to try a few & live with a little discomfort......or maybe a lot! Many times junkies seem to be immune to bear spray/pepper spray, happens all the time. You need a gun you can stake you life on, because you might be.

Hi there onegoodshot. I just bought a Walther SD 380. Seems like a nice little gun. It's still under evaluation. Just another suggestion if you want to take a look.
