I made a bit to get to the screw, but the screw won't budge. I know it has a reversed thread. Any tips to get this screw out. It work freely but the groove where the crane rides on the ball detent had some crude in it, so I want to take out the extractor to see what's in there. I worked it back and forth, sometimes tightening a bit breaks the thread tension loose.

A soak in some penetrating oil, sometimes ATF and Acetone works very well for this. Sometimes a bit of heat will also help. A small butane torch has been a pretty helpful way to apply heat right where I want it without risking too much heat...
I would do the soak for a few days and if that didn't do it, I would move to some heat. There have been times repeated soak/heat cycles have been required. Patience is your friend here!

I have been amazed by this stuff. I retrieved a 1930s horizontal milling machine from a New England barn that had sat for who knows how long. The overarm support consists of a 3" diameter precision ground rod that fits within the top of the casting over a span of about 18" and was rusted. I applied that concoction to a pair of rags I had fixed to the rod where it meets the casting front & rear. Patience: I soaked it morning and night for 7-10 days. Buffering the end of the rod with a 2x4, one good smack with a 3# sledge and it busted free. I couldn't believe it!

I sent the cylinder out to have the throats honed but the guy said they're not in the way. IF I have to deal with it later, I'll keep this in mind.

Another Kroil convert. I'm slowly (very slowly) working on a rusted up project Trapdoor and it's amazing what that stuff will break loose.
