I discovered I have 1 box of Hornady #45140 200 grain XTPs in my bullet stash. These are apparently normally for the 45 acp, have a dia of .451 and do not have a cannelure. (I do not load 45 acp so I mistakenly bought these.)
I'd like to load 'em up anyway in 45 Colt but I do not find any load data on 45 Colt with this bullet.
I have 2400, Unique, IMR4227, W231, Power Pistol.
I am thinking a mid-range load, nothing too hot but not the "cowboy" level 45 Colt. I'll be shooting these through a Redhawk. These .451s do catch slightly in the chamber mouth and easily push through with a pencil.
Any helpful insight appreciated. Thanks!

Just seat them a touch deeper than the ogive and crimp, shouldn’t be an issue. They will shoot quite low against sights that normally see 250gr+ bullets the 45 colts are known for.

Playing around with these trying to get a decent OAL I have to seat the bullet deeper into the case than what I can crimp it. I measure 1.615 still with the ogive below the case mouth.
I think I'll just take these back an trade them in for 250 grain XTP .452s. Gives me another excuse to hit Cabela's.

***** Your followup idea to trade the Hornady .45 200 XTP for the 250 grain XTP with crimp cannelure makes sense. Large diameter magnum-size case + light, short wheelbase bullet configured for ACP challenges ignition consistency, especially with slow powder. Even with a fast or medium powder, the bullet might not be happy in the Colt case. David Bradshaw

Am not sure why concerned with OAL if considering seating near to start of ogive, in a RH cylinder. Can't be too long. I've no 45 bores here, but will say Unique is your most flexible powder option. Some here should be able to quote you a safe charge weight to use up those bullets and have fun doing it. You won't be buying more. Am I missing something ?

***** Given your situation, I would try 9 grains/Unique. First, I’d make a dummy round----with absolute minimum flare to start bullet in case mouth. With neck tension. David Bradshaw

Remember the Hornady either 185 or 200 grain jacketed 45 bullet for target loads for the 45acp? Instead of a SWC nose it was more like a litte nipple? Well I use to load that over 9 grains of Unique like Bradshaw mentioned and hunt groundhogs with it. I remember shooting one TWICE with it from about 15 yards. First shot through the heart/lungs and had to finish him off with one through the head. You would think that load would have been fast enough to do better then that. They where very accurate however.
