Reading John Taffin's "Big Bore Sixguns", on page 138 there's a 4 inch 445 Supermag with compensator in the shroud. The gun looks glossy blued. Was this 4 inch comped shroud a factory offering, other than on the Alankan Guide Special? The Guide Special had a matte type coating on it, not a glossy bluing. Looking at the JT serial, it could have been a gun special made for Mr. Taffin. Maybe he will chime in on this. The DW collector side of me is curious, as I've not seen that shroud configuration. If it was a factory offering, I need to find one!

Yes they were factory production barrel assemblies. I have several for my 7445 Supermag(the top 2 barrels,) they were available in vent and vent heavy configuration. I also have the 4" vent heavy, but it isn't in this pic.

I'm curious if it was something made special for a gunwriter or actually something produced. I've never seen one, other than the Alaskan Guide Special, which wasnt blued, but a matte coating.

I've never really seen any 4 inch 445. Thanks!

I had a blued 6" factory comp 44 Magnum... the guns, so equipped needed regular maintenance... the barrel ( liner ) was ported, & so was the shroud... gasses got between the barrel & shroud... the one I had, we inherited from my FIL, who shot it all his years, with cast bullets... it took me a couple years to get to it after his death, & by that time the barrel & shroud were perfectly welded together, so in effect the barrel couldn't be removed ( tried solvents, & even some heat... they were really stuck... when my gunsmith buddy couldn't separate them, eventually the barrel had to be cut 1/2 to 1 inch behind the comp, to get them apart... if you have one, I highly recommend, separating the barrel & shroud, as part of your normal gun cleaning... the gun, & barrel stub, were used to make this snubby, so only the welded comp. went to waste... ( as you can see by the picture below, it was a vented factory 6" ported barrel )

This was a much more practical way to comp. a Dan Wesson ( notice there is one on the 44 Mag snubbie picture above as well ) I understand the collectability, of the factory pieces, but with a compensator barrel nut, no other changes were made to the guns...

Was that something offered aftermarket or something you had machined? I collect DWs and am only 31,so I missed all the old days when they were actually still a company and you could buy them new. Not too much info on them on the web outside of the DW Forum.

They are the creation of my retired gun smith buddy, and work really well, with no changes to the gun…
Even if you like the factory comp, pulling the gun apart after every firing, wears the barrel nut, and the threads
