That's disappointing! Though not too surprising as their warranty work in recent years SUCKS! They do not support or repair scopes that they no longer produce. I sent a 3X9 Classic Lightweight in for repair and was told that they would not repair it but that I could choose one of their lower end scopes free? The scope that I sent was at one time the top of their line and being steered to a lower quality scope rubbed me the wrong way. I complained to one of their managers and was "allowed" to choose a higher end scope, which was out of stock, and they could not tell me when they would even produce it!
FOURTEEN MONTHS LATER, I got the replacement.

Leupold has did nothing but gone down hill. used to offer scopes for about any rifle gloss, matte, silver, compact, fixed power etc now it's all tactical looking crap. they don't care about hunters using classic style rifles and the crap about what sell's just look what they get on ebay for gloss or silver leupold's used or elsewhere gunbroker, vintage gun scopes.com

I visited Leupold one day when I was in Portland to work on a job there. Had a devil of a time finding the place as it was behind a building that faced on the street its adress is on. The driveway looked like a private drive for the building in front of it. Anyway, when I walked into the showroom they had all their different wares on display and while I was looking at them I encountered an older gentleman. He looked past retirement age and was dressed in grey kackies. My initial impression was that he was the janitor since most of the men there seem to be dressed in suits or dress pants, white shirts, and ties. He ask if he could help me, and I told him I was just looking around as I had never seen a scope manufacturing facility before and was curios. He showed me around and seem to know everything I ask about the technical end of thing. It turned out he was the original owner and the one that started the business. By that time it was a corporation and owned by stockholders. He was still the major stockholder, but still came to work everyday and was humble enough to help someone like me. I suspect he has been gone many years by now and the bean counters have had their way by now. Its a shame though, at that time I was a dedicated Redfield user, but started buying Leupold scopes because of the man I met. I have always admired him since that day.

Never judge a book by its cover or a man by the clothes he chooses too wear.

If that was the message you got from what I wrote, I guess I should quit trying to pay tribute to people. I came away with admiration and respect for the man and have it to this day.

I called Leupold the other day, they informed me they’ve also discontinued all fixed power rifle scopes…

I can understand your admiration for the man and I would have admired him too. But by your own words. You did say your initial impression of the man was, that by his dress you thought he was the janitor. So my reply.

I find very little use for a magnified optic on a wheelgun. The dots get me to 200 yards well enough. Unlike handgun scopes the tech keeps advancing in dots….handgun scopes have been stagnant for a long time. This is my thinking as well – although I do understand there are those who do. Where I really appreciate a handgun scope is on a single shot pistol. However, even in that application, I question the superiority of a fixed 2X scope over an ultradot for common less than 100 yard situations. While a rifle scope can be pressed into service on a 22 hornet, a long eye relief handgun scope is a must on a 375JDJ. The discontinuing of fixed powered rifle scopes is another crime. As a northeast woods hunter this is all that is needed. A fan of fixed power scopes to the point that the only longer range firearm on hand, a custom Win 270, bears a fixed Leupold 6x42 VX-III. Even if forced to use a variable, the selection of low-powered types has never been that plentiful. Even the production of those has drifted toward the tactical application.

I have more rifle scopes in a fixed 4x variation than any other. And they are all mounted and ready to go. I am totally happy with that out to 200 yards on deer and pigs.

With the recent bad news of Leupold’s discontinuations in mind, does anyone have suggestions for currently manufactured fixed power rifle and, dare I ask, handgun scopes of suitably high quality?

Handgun scope. I really like the crimson trace reticle and glass. Probably the most clear glass in a handgun scope.

Not much out there in the way of new. Most recent acquisition was a Burris fixed 6X with target turrets for a 22 hornet contender. Before that a Bushnell trophy 2–6 variable, which is a real sleeper.. I tend to have better success with such transactions on the forums. Be picky and have patience. If you need something in a rush then this path is not for you.

I have pretty much switched to Burris and Bushnell Trophies but I still like the older fixed 2x Leupold

I have often searched in vain for a sensible reason to buy all the few used EERs and LERs that came my way here. Now I've learned the reason.

I too heard of the discontinuing mfg of Leupold handgun scopes.
I made a check of my spares,, and smiled,, as I have (3) Leupold 2X handgun scopes not already on a gun. I won't worry too much until I run out of those & need another one.
