I would definitely drop some $$$ for some of the 460gr 500L punch bullets… with or without knurling. Also the loaded ammo. Either way.

I’m taking a maxi to Africa next year, would love to have some in 475 or 510. I have 5 original 475’s and a bunch of .458’s I loaded for when I took my father Bear hunting.

As Jeff Cooper used to say, "I have mine" at least in .452, but I'd be a buyer if someone would make them in a 450 grain .510 with the Belt Mountain/lbt nose shape. They seemed well proven, not sure why anyone would mess with success. The note from Kelye said use as is at 45 colt velocity but tumble lube for 454 velocity. Mine are knurled, not sure if this changed with the addition of the relief grooves.

Later bullets didn't have knurling, a relief groove was placed between 2 driving bands. I made some bullets for the 475 Linebaugh #1 rifles, had a lot of bullet hanging out of the case to increase powder capacity. Did the same for a Ruger #1 in 50 Alaskan. KELYE: A WHILE BACK YOU STILL HAD SOME .452 PUNCH BULLETS ON HAND @ $x.xx PER BULLET, STILL HAVE ANY FOR SALE?

I FOUND MY ORIGINAL 5 PUNCH BULLETS THAT KELYE GAVE TO ME AT A LINEBAUGH SHOOT IN TEXAS BACK IN 2005 (IIRC), THOSE BULLETS WERE LABELED AS .452, WEIGHED 300grs, HAD THE KNURLING, AND HAD 1 SQUARE/NON-RADIUSED CRIMPING GROOVE. THE PUNCH BULLETS THAT I USED IN AFRICA IN 2009 WEIGH 320grs, HAVE 2 RADIUSED CRIMP GROOVES AND THE SHALLOW RELIEF GROOVE KELYE MENTIONS.
BEFORE THE PUNCH BULLETS I HAD BARNES MACHINE ME 500 MONLITHIC FN TYPE BULLETS FOR USE IN 45 COLTS/454's. I DESIGNED THEM, 265grs, 2 SQUARE CRIMPING GROOVES (FOR SAME OAL IN 45 COLT AND 454 CASES), BUT NO KNURLING OR SHALLOW RELIEF GRROVE. THEY WERE OF COURSE LIGHT FOR LENGTH AND I COULD NOT GET ENUFF POWDER IN THE CASE TO PUSH 'em MUCH MORE THAN 1,800fps. I STILL HAVE AROUND 300 OF 'em AND WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE THEM WITH SOMEONE WHO COULD MACHINE THE SHALLOW RELIEF GROOVE IN 'em. DO NOT KNOW IF THE SQUARE CRIMP GROOVES ARE A PROBLEM WITH A TYPICAL ROLL CRIMP DIE, AND MAYBE THE LEE COLLET CRIMP DIE WOULD BE A BETTER CHOICE? WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?
SO IN BUILDING A NEW PUNCH LIKE BULLET THE DESIGNER SHOULD AT LEAST CONSIDER:
1. NOSE PROFILE (I THINK KELYE's VERSION MAY BE HARD TO IMPROVE ON);
2. 1 OR 2 CRIMP GROOVES;
3. SQUARE CRIMP GROOVE(s) OR RADIUSED; AND
4. LENGTH AND SHALLOWNESS OF THE RELIEF GROOVE.
I WILL BE POSTING A PICTURE OR PICTURES OF L-R: 1) THE BARNES MONOLITHIC, 2) THE 300gr KNURLED PUNCH, 3) THE 320gr PUNCH, and 4) A LEHIGH 300gr .452 WFN.

It's really not harder to machine a regular crimp groove than it is to cut a straight square one. One would have to make a collet to hold the bullet though.

In fact it probably wouldn't be too difficult to bore out the base of the bullet while it's already chucked up and swage in some lead if somebody already had a swager set up.

Swiss Machine lathe with a bar feeder would knock out bullets fast.
Swedging in the lead automatically would take some thought but very doable.

Anyone have any of the knurled version in 460gr .510 they would be willing to part with?

Is the punch bullet nose profile the same or very similar to the "640" series of cast bullets? It sure looks like it.

Looks more like the LBT lfn profile to me

ANOTHER COMMENT RE THE DESIGN CRITERIA TO CONSIDER, THE 325gr BARNES BUSTER, HAS 2 CONVENTIONAL knurled IN CRIMP GROOVES AND IS .451 IN DIAMETER. THE EXCELLENT SIERRA 300gr JACKETED FP BULLET IS, IIRC, .4515 IN DIAMETER, WHILE THE SWIFT A FRAMES ARE .452 IN DIAMETER. JUST A feeling, NO EXTENSIVE TESTING ON MY PART, BUT THE BARNES SHOOT GOOD AND FAST IN MY FA MODEL 83 454's WITHOUT HIGH PRESSURE SYMPTOMS, HAVE ALWAYS felt LIKE THE .451 DIAMETER WAS A GOOD IDEA FOR HIGH PRESSURE TOP END 454 LOADS.
