My dad was a lifelong tool and die maker and I found this mystery tool among his many tools. It has a tiny hidden drill bit under the red rubber protector and the cone shaped object slides up and down the shaft. The wire nut on the rear is securely fastened and will not budge if removing it is attempted, so it appears as if it's intended to work as some sort of tiny hand drill. On one hand it looks a kind of Rube Goldberg DIY thing but it's a bit too complicated for a one off, and appears as if it were commercially made. Anyone know what it might have been used for?

It looks sort of like a flash hole uniformer with the sliding part being a concentricity gauge to center it.

My dad, also a lifelong tool & die maker, made me one, but that one actually looks like one which was sold commercially some years ago. The commercially-made one I remember actually used a wire nut as a handle as pictured above.

Here's a pic with the tool dimensions... A flash hole uniforming was a good shot, but for a hand tool it would be too hard to cut that much metal as it's really oversize. Also the "cone" would stop .595" before it would touch the base of the case because the .595" front section will stop it. Also the "cone" has that 2.220" of free travel.

That’s a primer picker uniformer. I have one or two. K&M if I recall. Mine has a hex head drive on the end instead of wire nut.

It IS a flash hole uniformer to remove any flashing around the inside of the cartridge case. I have one identical to the one pictured.

Maybe but the "cone" thingy is useless being so far away from the base of the case, and doing only one by hand isn't worth the struggle, a drill is several times easier.

...the fixed cone let me somewhat puzzled_ I agree about being an inner flash hole reamer, but patiently handmade or, if industrially produced, poorly engineered at least: for sure not of universal use_ mine (Sinclair) has an height-adjustable sliding cone: a little hex provides to block it to the desired measure, and can be drill-operated, o.c._

The one that I have was gifted to me. I thought that the yellow wingnut or wire nut was a homemade remedy until I researched it further.lol

The cone thing goes in the case neck to align the tool with the flash hole working from the inside to remove flash hole burrs. Hope this helps

Those white caps on the ends look like wire nut connectors for electrical wiring work. Just saying.
