Besides the 50-110/475 and 50Alaskan/475, both fun cartridges, but bottle necks. I dug out a pile of .475 straight wall cases from .480 Ruger, .475 Ruger, .475 Linebaugh, .475L Maximum, and .475/70. (45/70 blown out to .475) projectiles from 275-500 grain. This will pretty much run the gamut of light to Rhino killers. There’s just something about throwing those big weighty chunks of lead out there at any speed. Here’s a few straight walled cartridges.

I wanted a nice 480 in the worst way. Now I’m kind of glad I didn’t jump on one. I did get a 500jrh that is traded and heading out tomorrow. I’ve been looking at some BIG game hunts lately and I’m confident a hot 45c or 454 will do anything I need and I’ll be able to find brass for them if I ever need more. I realize variety is the spice and all of that, but with no factory support it’s really risky business.

All my revolvers, single shots and lever guns that shoot .475 calibers start at Linebaugh size, so I can load light, ( trail boss) medium (HS-6) or heavy (2400, H110, 4227) the .480R and 475R are like specials in a magnum. I personally really like everything over .454. I also know that everything on Earth can be taken with the .454 loaded correctly for the intended game animal. Been there done that, now starting over with different calibers.

The big reason I want a set of 480 Blackhawks is because I never thought Ruger would make it. I've got a few 475's but rarely shoot them as I much prefer the 500L.

Jeff Quinn did some good work with the Ruger #1 rifle in 475 Linebaugh, I have some Punch bullets that hung out of the case and left room for more powder. Using H110 he got these 400 grain bullets going over 2000 fps. I tried them in the 475 Turnbull but that was too much of a good thing.

The 475-70 is very interesting, what kind of performance does it have ? Basically load it like a 45/70 load, but in the contender carbine single shot, I can shoot those, 475 Maxi’s, 475L’s, and Rugers (480, 475) No real benefit in power over the 45/70, just different. The two larger bottle neck cases made on 50 Alaskan and 50-110 cases necked to .475 create awesome power. There’s a few variations, most notably the Turnbulls. But with small variations, others. I have an Exhilarating single shot, (50AK/475) also known as a 476GNR, from Gary Reeder, it’s a heavy 12” barrel Encore, with a large brake that’s capable of launching 500 grain 470 Nitro bullets at 1800+. On an Africa trip in 2022 with my buddy Blake, he used his on a few critters. Needless to say, no bullets were recovered. Realistically a solid 350 grainer at 480 Ruger speeds will do just about anything you need to, but where’s the fun in just Adequate!
