I've had untold dozens of 1911 pistols in many calibers (.38 special, .38 super, 9mm, .45, .40, 10mm, .357 Sig, 9x25) and all but one worked... the AMT Hardballer. Several gunsmiths I took it to laughed when I took it out of the case :-)
Junk 1911 mags? Yup I've had some cheapies that wouldn't work but that isn't the fault of the gun it's the previous owner's fault for buying them.

I've seen good 1911 magazines and bad 1911 magazines. Seem to come in all styles, sizes, and flavors. There was a time when hardball magazine and wadcutter magazine feed lips were cut distinctly different. These days, unless you find an old hardball magazine, they all look the same. I remember watching the AMU armorers shape feed lips with a little steel jig they'd place inside the magazine and then hammer and file the feed lips into shape.
