I told myself and my wife I wouldn’t mess with the hogs this afternoon. Well, the cows weren’t up to water so I had to go find them. I wasn’t on the Atv 2 minutes when I spotted the first group of hogs in some Johnson grass. I made a sneak on them and “pretended” to shoot one before continuing on my way. I soon found the cows in a wheat field and while looking them over I noticed a bunch of hogs milling around with a group of calves. I guess I didn’t need too much of an “excuse” to shoot one because I decided they shouldn’t be doing that and set out after them. I was able to get down behind a terrace and close the distance quickly. I intentionally picked a longer shot of 100+ yds on a bigger pig and tried to stay off the shoulder. At the shot, they broke out and this one made probably 200yds before tumbling. Thanks goodness it was pretty open country and I saw it fall. After examination I found the shot had landed tight behind the shoulder as I intended but was a full 3” below my hold point. I would imagine it got the lower portion of the heart. I’m sighted 1” high at 25yds and I must confess after sighting in I just went hunting. Yes, unethical I know. I’ll try to remedy that tomorrow and get out to some longer ranges. The 357 did good work again and that makes me pretty happy. It did appear that there was minimal expansion by looking at the exit so this alloy may need some shoulders to get it opening up. Pig is 150# or so.

That’s a great shot on a hog. Their heart sits so much lower than people usually think. Keep knocking them down. I’m jealous!

If you aim for a high shoulder shot, the spine takes a big drop to be able to connect to the back of the head. Mid way up the chest and slightly in front of the shoulder when broadside severs the spine and they should be laying right where the impact took place. It’s a different place to aim for most folks, but on pigs it makes recovery much easier. Typically the response is a stiff legged rollover.

When you can visualize the spine there you can make that shot from quartering aspects as well. I send a variety of feral hog pics to my wife and have her draw dots on aiming locations with them in a variety of stances. It helps her with shot placement for pigs, everything else she shoots behind the shoulder.

Trapr I’ve killed a LOT of hogs and with a bigger gun I normally center the shoulders to break them down. Do the same thing on deer. Don’t like loosing some meat, but being color blind, I don’t like tracking blood much either. These last three I’ve shot have been more about gaining knowledge of a HP cast bullet and getting some confidence back in the 357 for hunting. It was my first choice and favorite for many years but I always used good jacketed bullets. Since I got a case of the jerks a while back and my wrist has been bothering me, it’s nice to know I can fall back on something with so little recoil and continue to hunt. I think a 41 mag will end up being my everyday hunter and a 44spl my everyday carry.

Awesome!!!!! I’ve been following all the post about pigs and .357’s. The .357 is my favorite round!!!! Probably since it was the first handgun I bought when I was 16.
Im jealous of all the pig hunting. I’ve said this a ton of times. I wish We had them here in NY. But most guys response is no you don’t!!!! Someday I will go hunt them somewhere.

There are lots of opportunities out there to hunt them reasonably. I have sold hog hunts on my farms In the past and had people from as far away as Russia come hunt!

Don't give up on that load, I think you just hit a little bit low because of that 25 yd zero & you stretched it out to around 100 yds, it happens. I'm pretty sure you have a good thing going with your low recoiling 357 magnum load, keep it up. A bad hit with a 41 magnum is no different than a bad hit from a 357 or a 454. You seem to be in your comfort zone out to 100 yds with that gun, keep banging those hogs, we're liking the write ups!! Maybe you can catch reflex, if you live to be 100 That is a pile of critters, yikes! Dick

I am quite impressed you actually hit the thing! I really dont think I could with the way I shake. Congratulations on your hog and keep going. At that distance, how much of the hog was covered up by the front sight? Probably half of it? That makes things challenging for sure. Heck, even if I aimed at the top of its back, that shot is just in my "cone of dispersion". Keep whacking em and good job on the stalk!

I think it’s a 3moa dot so doesn’t cover too much at 100yds. Even with a 4moa Ultradot, I find I can use either “tip” of the dot for precise aiming at longer range. Don’t care much for the venom if anybody is looking for one. Have this one and one NIB. I got a couple Holosun tube sights I’m going to try out but I’ll probably end up back at the tried and true Ultradot even though I don’t care for the size or looks.

It's like when I lived in Tulsa my best friend down there hands shook so hard when aiming his Smith 41 Magnum I asked him how the hell did he ever hit anything. He said "I guess I squeeze the trigger at the right moment". I guess he did because he's one of the best shots I know.
