I have an acquaitance that lives in England and he has a Pedersoli Sharp 45-70. No matter what cast he shoots from it, even powder coat, the bullet goes completes side ways. He's a machinist so he knows how to measure things and the bore is near perfect as he can find. No tight/lose spots and the bore at the muzzle is not larger then the breech. Can you fellows give any insight as to what the problem might be. He has another friend here is the states that is quite knowledgeable about this stuff and the both of them are stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the twist rate and bullet length/weight? Definitely sounds like a stability problem.

This may not help but one of our club's "Buffalo" competitors was having a problem with key holing bullets at 100 yards and our full size buffalo target is shot at 312 yards. We were all trying to figure out his problem as he purchased the rifle and got advice on his handloads from the rifles former owner who never had the problem.
It turns out that the new owner was failing to bell the mouths of his resized 45-70 cases before seating new bullets. In effect he was sizing his bullets too small while seating his bullets. When he told us he thought it was odd that he was getting a ring of lead off each bullet as he was seating them we knew what his problem was. Once he started belling the case mouths his problem with keyholing went away and he won our last Buffalo match.
Now, this is probably not the problem but it does indicate that it takes very little to mess up while reloading your ammo.

I'm going to pass prallaxbills idea along. See what we get for reply. Could be something that simple.

THE ONLY KEYHOLING ISSUE I RECALL WAS WITH AN ITALIAN 32-20 COLT SAA CLONE, THE COMMERCIALLY CAST 115gr RNFP BULLET WOULD KEYHOLE, A DIFFERENT 100gr BULLET WAS A SHOOTER.
