Specifically, Is the brass shorter on Hornady's 165gr FTX loading ? In 44mag, understand it is. Anyone know how much shorter, if it is ?

It is. As I recall, it's something like 2.06" versus the standard 2.25". -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Thank You. My thought, and likely brought up when the 430JDJ had just fallen into my lap, to maybe scrounge up 444M/FTX brass to use if close enough, or minimal trimming. Rather than using 444 Marlin brass. Soo.. The 430JDJ, per da Man, a 1/10", .100 shorter. Playing with averages of your numbers, getting .140" short. That .04" a bother ? I'm not pushing things, load-wise anyways. If doable, I'll just put the word out, asking for 444M/FTX empties. ?

So just measured some now .430 JDJ empties, 2.120" . Seeing 444M max OAL of 2.25", trim lengths vary some between manuals, but the 2.217" offered above is right there. Am thinking it will safely work, to ask for once fired 444M/FTX hulls to use in my 430JDJ. Opinions ?

When I talked to JDJ, it was a one shot/call deal. I deleted the number I was given so as not to be tempted ! But whenever I bring up the 430JDJ, I see lots of views, little posts, shares. Nothing on you guys, don't read tween the lines please. My thought is, JDJ can not have made very many. Anyone have any insight into how many he may have made ?

Interesting tidbit i learned the other day about 444 marlin brass. It can be used to fabricate short .410 bore shotshells!!!

That's worth knowing, for sure. The gent I got the gun from, his main use for it was pest control. Muzzle end of Super 14 44mag barrel is inside reamed, and threaded for... I have no idea. But most of loaded ammo that came with, for varmint control in his BIG garden.

Soo0..who has a box or 2 of Hornady FTX 444 Marlin once fired brass, that doesn't need, want it ? No reloading use for it ? I have a box of unfired 444 Marlin brass , I'd rather not cut down, if I don't have to.

Real big 375x444 fan here so not likely I'll ever wind up with a 430 or have a lot to contribute toward your posts however it may explain the curiosity/views. On this (primarily revolver) forum, any posts on break-open single shots always gets my attention. For me, hunting handguns have always been either T/Cs or single action revolvers with the revolver being the more versatile but the T/C perhaps represents the pure hunting pistol (provided the game doesn't bite back). I was initially referred to this forum from a single shot pistol forum.

I got my 430 barrel back in the early 90's. It was really over shadowed by the 375. Not really any major gains over the one he rechambered to 444 Marlin for me.
I haven't shot it in 20 years. Might have to break it out once it warms up some.

INot really any major gains over the one he rechambered to 444 Marlin for me. That's probably probably most people's view on it and why it wasn't real popular. I can remember myself thinking "Why? It's more work, for basically the same thing?" (And perhaps a more jaded view, "He changed it ever so slightly just so he could put his name on it?") The shortening it so you can't accidentally load the original in your Contender thing works if the original parent cartridge isn't chambered in the Contender, but in this case it was. So...? You could argue about efficiency and working better in the short barrel I guess, but I don't think people buying .444's really cared about that angle.

Yeah, the 430JDJ was a very brief window of time in cartridge history. As explained, to me, JDJ was not comfortable with safety factor when first asked for a 444 Marlin chambering. The 430JDJ, a 1/10" shorter and folks asked to stay 10K PSI lower than 444 Marlin. The red headed step child of JDJ cartridges.
