Anyone hunting deer with a Ruger Old Army?
I've heard they could approach 45C level performance. Any input on that?

I think Kim Ralston has some experience with this. Seems he posted a video one time of a kill he got with one. Hopefully he sees the thread.

I see that Hawk bullets has a line of bullets for cap n ball's. Bandit Bullets. Not sure if they are available yet. Ball-ets have been around, A search or call to Dixie Gun Works and The Muzzle Loader Shop might be a good idea too. I know of a deer downed with a .36 many years ago. Am sure back in the day..

No deer, but I have used it with RB for hogs. Worked great!

Using the .457 round ball, I get 4” groups at 50 yards. Although the balls are very accurate, I wasn’t quite pleased with performance on game - although it worked. I’ve since acquired some Kaido bullets, which are developed specifically for the Old Army. I haven’t had time to work with that bullet yet, but hopefully before next hunting season I will.

You're correct the balls are super accurate. The conicals are the same. I've shot every kind of bullet from my ROA including jacketed. I rarely shoot round balls from it anymore because I like the performance of conicals. Mainly just for playing around I shoot all the types of 200 SWC cast bullets from my ROA. I have also shot the 255 SWC meant for the 45 Colt with very decent velocity which I'll explain in the next sentences. I exclusively use Hodgdon's Triple Seven. With the 200 grain SWC I get velocities in the 1200 fps range easily. The 255 gets very close to that. Even though it's a heavy revolver it recoils like 23000 +P loads! This should be ample for most hunting in the country. I've been out hunting deer with it, but unfortunately have not gotten a shot at one. I don't believe it would be anything different then using +P 45 Colt loads. From what I hear and read all these ROA's are very accurate.

Revolvercranker, that sounds like great performance. How do you use 777, do you compress it much? Any idea what extreme spreads are at those velocities?

It's very important that you compress it hard as you can. I learned this from my muzzle loading rifle days. I actually talked to Hodgdon about it. They also gave me the percentage to reduce 777 in comparison as Pyrodex stating 777 was much more powerful. Myself I consider 777 as Dirty Smokeless Powder. The ingredients are entirely different with 777. I'm not saying it doesn't corrode things when not clear, but I can state affirmately that is very mild if at all. What was it that internet gun forum people use to say about Trailboss, that they think it's a BP substitute sort of and that it's corrosive? Who knows as we're not in the industy.

Thanks for this info, I really appreciate it. I’m glad to hear it. I’ve been compressing it in 1/4 load stages with a loading stand, and it’s been great in my .50 roa conversion. 275gr kaido conicals are about 1120 if I remember right and like 6fps or so spread. And the barrel is 5.5” long. I remember seeing someone doing a test where they burned different powders and substitutes on mild steel and then let the fouling sit in their warm garage in a very humid region. 777 was by far the least corrosive, and who knows if what little corrosion there was was just due to the crud attracting humidity. I’m a big fan so far but I do plan to test it agains 3F Swiss just to test velocity, and see some fireballs 😅

I did this with my stainless ROA for 3 weeks and TN is pretty humid, especially in my basement, and all it got on it was clean water droplets. That may have been the humidity attracted to it with whatever is in 777. I cleaned it and put it away. All I do with the 1860 is spray it down liberally with WD 40 (yeah I know, but I've never had bad things happen with WD 40) including cocking the hammer back spraying in there, inside the cylinder chambers, down the barrel, in the trigger slot, all this over my garbage can. Let it stop dripping, wipe it some, put in the safe. Been there 1/2 year now and nothing on it.

Thanks for sharing! Makes me feel good about using it, since my roa is blued That’s interesting about wd-40, I’ve heard things that made me shy away from using it, but at the same time it was just opinion the only thing “scientific” was a writer who said he had found that it could penetrate around primers in a cartridge, and foul them. And I’m not sure that he tested it carefully. I’ve read a lot about it being harmful to air guns, because it corrodes o-rings etc, and yet a master pellet gun builder and world champion air gunner who I know well uses it on his pellets all the time. I’d say it’s obviously not causing problems, keep on keeping on! I’ll have to give it a shot.

Well I'm not about to hijack this thread on WD 40 let's just say I've been using it for about 50 years and I hadn't had it do anything bad. nuff said

I've never spent any real time with the cap and ball revolver, but would really like to try it out for deer. Thank you for the replies.
