This is another re-run question, I’m sure: Can new model Blackhawk cylinders be adapted to work with old model Blackhawks, or can old model Blackhawks be adapted to work with new model Blackhawk cylinders? I have an extra blued new model 44 special cylinder, and I’m wondering if it can be used to convert an old model 357 to 44 special or maybe a rechamber to 45 Colt.

In general,, it's better to use OM to OM & NM to NM. But if going the custom route,, anything is possible,, with enough money.
That said,, look at the cylinder boss differences,, AND the distance the barrels protrudes into the frame window. You will see that dimension is why you keep the models apart.
Now,, the Single-Six,, a different story.

Yes, your new model cylinder can be used in the conversion on an old model. That's if your smith is competent and willing. Maybe it will be minor fitting. Could be major machine work. Most special conversions just rechamber the original 357 cylinder. Usually cheaper and easier in the long run. I do have an old model 30 carbine cylinder I plan to make into a long 357 cylinder for an OM, but I will do my own machine work.

I would like to be able to use Ross Seyfried’s heavy 30k psi loads in 44 special or Brian Pearce’s 23k 45 Colt loads. Plus’s OM cylinders tend to batter noses and ratchets much quicker than new model cylinders. That is why David Clements installed Ratchet bushings on old model cylinders as standard procedure.

Yes. However The bore center is the key. The new model 44 special is on the new mid frame which should be .517 bore center. The new model standard blackhawk is .546. That will not work. Your old model 357 will be the .517 bore to base pin center. 41,44,45 30 carbine are all .546. Hope that helps. R PS: dont forget the clearance groove for the firing pin on the old model.

Having fired a few rounds through old model Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks, without battering a cylinder hub or ratchet, I would appreciate articulation of such wear, and whether or not the shooter subscribes to lubrication. David Bradshaw

David Bradshaw Point well taken. Sadly, I think the fact is that the average fellow doesn’t subscribe to lubrication.

singleaction.... meant to say “without battering” cylinder hub or ratchet. I don’t know the effect of shooting beaucoup magnums through a dry revolver, as I tend to grease base pin, ratchet, hub. Oil will also do. Note: Bill Ruger and Bill, Jr., referred the the integral “gas ring” on their single action cylinder as the hub. Its function is to deflect gas fouling from the base pin. As for the rest od the gun, single and double action revolver lockwork is lubed, usually with synthetic motor oil or chassis grease----including sear/full cock interface.
Now, in the presence of endshake on big magnum... slide hammer effect is real. David Bradshaw
