What a great read! And what a guy. However, not a single word about silver solder. But I'm definitely not disappointed.

Oh understood …….there is nothing not on Practical Machinist……..lol It takes some heat to get the sight off. Then dance the flame on the barrel and wipe off as much silver solder off when it is liquid.

My experience… Propane / Butane won’t get hot enough. MAPP will get there,,, sorta. Oxyacetylene is best, quick & easiest.
I put the heat to the sight & base, comes off within ~ 30 seconds. I do it upside down and it just falls off, I have a fine brass brush handy, to clean it all off while liquid/ hot.
Yes there is a very small locator pin to keep a eye out for and it can be re-used to aid in re-location.

An additional question, are any precautions taken to prevent scale in the bore?

That is a great idea! Long time ago when I did it so don’t remember much except lots of heat and the pin.

Brownells used to carry an anti scale paste you could use in the barrel. Don't know if they still do.

Thanks for posting John Linebaugh had complete success with Brownells low temp silver solder.
Practical Machinist is a good site but not forgiving like this one. Don’t ask any questions about your Harbor Freight mini lathe!

Thanks for posting John Linebaugh had complete success with Brownells low temp silver solder. Practical Machinist is a good site but not forgiving like this one. Don’t ask any questions about your Harbor Freight mini lathe! John had full faith in it. Physics agrees. All we ever used in his shop. As to Practical Machinist Oh no!!!!! No Chinese equipment…….in the rules. I think the threads are locked or disappear….. Milacron (owner) says it is a Pro Forum. Lots of sub forums. And any machining question can be asked…….and will be answered…………if it isn’t there……give up. One time there was a thread on the Deep Water Horizon when the well was being stoppered. Someone called called BS on a guy and how did he know “Because I am working the job and have been down there” Love those threads
