I would like to remove a factory front site/base from a SS Blackhawk barrel. At what temperature is this achieved? Thanks!

Great question, I always wondered if Ruger used a low-temperature or high temperature solder to afix their sight bases.

Got an answer from a highly trusted source on another forum. The front sites are silver brazed on, so they require high temperature to remove.

It is not a strong silver solder.
Silver solder strength goes from maybe 15k to 125k lbs tensile.
With corresponding temp
Some of Brownells melt at 475 F

I took one off. Took a surprising amount of heat. Discolored
the barrel. I have barrel and looking at it, it has a hole corresponding with one in sight base for a pin. So they don’t come off easily. I was tapping on it and getting now where till I used enough heat and realized there was a pin in there also. I agree silver braze- whole different animal.
Uneducated guess says it took way more heat than solder

That sounds maybe right for Ruger stiff ….as the OP asked as I reread When I worked with John Linebaugh he used the Brownell low temp stuff…..more than enough. Never had a sight come off High strength true Silver brazing will tear steel if done right. |

That used to be the largest technical forum on earth. May still be. There is a great thread by a guy that invented a new machine There are only 26(27?) different machines in the world. Last one before his was done in Sandia Base in the 40s The patent had to be written differently…….PM is an amazing place. The folks on there have built everything today that God Didn’t. |

A higher up called and said they had a problem. Mr Newbould was driving thru the Midwest and stopped in. Problem……measure an angle to a radius to .001” They were getting to .003 and would settle for .002” THey had an engineering department working on this for a couple of years. Head of development very full of himself……. Newbould looked at the problem and headed back to Florida where he was living. 1/2 way home he called and said he had an idea and named a price ($10k I think……cash discount) Got there and used one of his positioners and had maybe a 1/2 dozed engineers measure the way he told them. Blind from one another. Department head said it wouldn’t work. They were within .0001-.0002” I think………took a check(they wouldn’t do cash) and drove back to Florida. There was (and May still be) a 9’ long display in the center of The Smithsonian showing this. And a very humble and funny guy. You could call him and ask a grinder question. He was just a member of the forum. And started the thread if anyone was interested HUNDREDS of people were reading it. He has passed. Sadly. But in the heady high altitudes of fine work and close work……..He The Man |
