Sooooo I was swapping the hammer plunger from my SBH hammer to my Bisley hammer and the spring shot my plunger out. No big deal, I put the plunger back in to try again, but I didn’t realize that the spring had snuck out with it until I got the plunger in there. Now to my problem…how do I get that pesky rascal out? I’ve tried a paper clip but can’t get the angle right to push it out. Am I SOL? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Maybe tray a magnet or have a semi hard surface and pound the bottom of the hammer on it and hope it sneaks out a little.

Tap the hammer up and down on a non marring surface and let inertia try to pull it out

Tapping on a rare earth magnet has worked for me. Two light taps and it was stuck to it, without mmy having to find both it and the spring.

Thanks guys. I tried to slide a magnet along the channel and get it to come out that way..no luck. I will try tapping it to the magnet like y’all said. I wonder if I could get a tiny dab of glue on a paper clip and put it in there and let it dry if it would come out that way.

Not to question what you said but just for further knowledge.

Glue won't absorb into metal at all. If it spreads out on the plunger it can, by capillary action, run up the sides and make the plunger nearly permanently stuck. I recommend the most powerful magnet you can find combined with tapping the hammer on a firm surface and/or tapping the hammer with the handle of a screw driver.
Is it at least correctly oriented in the hole. No spring under it, but with the "cap" face out?

And yes it is oriented correctly, I actually was putting the cross pin in when I noticed the spring laying on my mat. I guess there was just enough grime in the hole to make me think I was pushing against the spring tension when I was pushing it in. Lesson learned, from now on the plunger and hole are going to be kept clean with a drop of oil.

A fine dentist pick with a tiny right angle bend at the tip.... should reach the PLUNGER SRING. The hammer PLUNGER on a Ruger New Model single action is of smaller diameter than for the Colt-style “old model.”
Check to be sure the plunger spring is not broken, that no piece of spring, old grease, or gradou is in the hole. Clean plunger tile and lube before reassembly.
Don’t force lockwork when reassembling revolver. Lightly lube lockwork (I use synthetic motor oil & grease), and this includes the FULL COCK DOG (hammer) and SEAR (trigger). David Bradshaw

Outside the box. Blow compressed air in on side of the pin hole while plugging the far side with the pin. I'd probably add some Ed's Red or Kroil to it also. If dried up grease in the hole it'll loosen it up. Carb cleaner though the cross pin hole might work too. No magnet.

I tried a magnet several different ways and it seems that it is just grabbing the hammer and not the pin. That may have worked if the hammer was some inert material and the plunger was the only thing that the magnet would take to.
