I have a nice overtime check coming.
So, I went looking at guns and guitars. (I love both). I found a good deal on a .270. It is a tang safety Ruger 77. It had a older VX3 Leupold. I think 3.5 X10. But maybe 2.5X8. It was in good shape and was going for 650.00. The tang safety Ruger's in my experience were spotty. Either good or bad. I had a 300 Win that was very good and remember a .308 that was just awful. If I remember correctly Ruger was outsourcing barrels on the early 77s. And from Different makers. I have herd, many admiring remarks about tang safety 7mm Mag's. Anybody have experience with an old model 77 in .270 win? Thanks...tj

My first bolt action big game rifle! Bought it new in the late seventies! Has taken everything from elk, caribou, mule deer ,antelope and more! Great accurate rifle !! Mine had no iron sights and still wears the weaver wide field 2x7 scope! Again the favorite of mine!!

I would say buy it. If it’s not a shooter pull the scope off and send it down the road. I always Keep a good scope from a rifle before I sell It.
If I remember correctly the older 77’s had Douglas barrels for a period of time?

I've had several "Tang-Safety" Rugers and most shot very well. I remember ONE in 7x57 (with sights) which was a real heart-breaker. Shot like crap. Bedding them always improved upon their performance, particularly in terms of consistency from one session to another. They are a little bit of a pain to bed, but I did them in three stages to make it somewhat less troublesome. I get the angled front action screw in terms of theory, but I honestly cannot say that in practice it did anything better than any vertical front action screw. I was never a fan of the spring-loaded ejector, but most people seem to get along with it just fine. These days, ANY blued rifle with a real walnut stock seems to bring a premium, so if it's a good price, you can't hardly go wrong.
EDIT: WAIT! One more thing. Those ingenious and super-rugged scope rings can leave a scope tube looking like a piece of beaver-chewed wood if you don't clean up the outside edge a bit before mounting the scope and they WILL swage the tube if you crank them down too hard. I've bought a few very nice, perfectly serviceable used scope for cheap because of the Ruger bite-marks left on them.
