Serious eye candy: www.gunbroker.com/item/1020000204This 404 Jeffrey was built on what is most likely a run of the mill pre-war large ring standard Mauser 98 action (a lot of the British makers use DWM actions, as they were so well-made, and like new examples can still be found at reasonable prices). Standard 404 Jeff loads run at very low pressure, so CCH works ok in this application. High pressure rounds require better Carburizing/heat treating processes than CCH can impart to the old low carbon tool steels used to make pre-war 98 actions. Ralph Martini, up in Alberta, uses Oscar Cobb (a smith in eastern Canada) to CCH pre-war 98’s and the modern 98’s made from 8620. With regards to 4140 used in a lot of modern single actions, Turnbulls still seems to be tops in my book. CCH in 4140 is purely cosmetic, and I guess Turnbull’s methods are proprietary. I wish others would develop CCH processes similar to Turnbull, as Turnbull’s shop has gotten just outrageously expensive. Despite the outrageous price, I won’t use anyone else for CCH.

Apparently Turnbull is getting into the other type. I hear he was removed from his business by family. I agree the bone charcoal type appeals the most to me. But I prefer blue guns. I do like the colored hammers but the sides getting worn is not pretty. I had 2 Turnbull finished custom Rugers, they both faded significantly after shooting a lot. I sold them. My wife hates the cch guns, says they look like color flashing on oil stains in parking lots. Its an accurate assessment.

I think that some of the low-temp or chemical CCH looks like oil flashing, for sure. Clear cerakote can make CCH last a long time. Laquer protects for a while, but must be reapplied often enough that clear cerakote just makes more sense. I guess I really don’t mind if it does rub off as long as I’m the one that used it and enjoyed it.

Pistol grip and checkering on that Mauser look 100% vintage Husqvarna, best configuration ever put on a bolt rifle. David Bradshaw

I've been keeping my eye out for who can consistently do that CCH in that blue / orange colorburst like Turnbulls. I'd say there's at least 3 others. Viktor's in Ohio is excellent and not overpriced.
