I've dealt with leading in the 357mag my whole time I've been shooting. But it's just too much in the Maximum. I know others have had to deal with it in the 357, too.
I finally hit a simple mix that doesn't lead to 1800fps. And no I don't want to powder coat.
2 pounds tin 100 pounds of range scrap 75 pounds of COWW 25 pounds of SOWW
Comes out to:
96% lead 1.3% tin 1.65% Antimony 0.1% Arsenic The rest is trace metals
11bhn air-cooled. 18bhn water dropped.
Sized .358", no leading is observed even after a few hundred shots of full max loads.
This alloy passed the hammer test with flying colors. The hp seems to be beginning to open well

I think its cool that you put this effort in to achieve your goal, but it makes me appreciate powder coating so much!

Bigbore5, what are you using for bullet lube? I'm glad that your new alloy is working great, but if leading should rear it's ugly head again...(knock on wood), you might give my Carnauba Blue a try. I've used it in everything from 38spl to 500S&W with great results. I've even pushed it to 2800fps in a 14twist 30-06 and had a clean barrel.

It helped alot, but didn't stop it alone. I've been using water-droppped coww for 40 yrs and just cleaning the lead in the 357 mag because that's just what my Uncle did. Dad won't own a 357 because they lead. Well a couple years ago when I broke down and finally got a Maximum, it really became an issue to be addressed. Tried powder coat. Nope. Tried powder and lube . Nope. Tried the blue lube. Nope. So I started softening up the alloy after reading how soft people on here were having success with. Bingo!

I had a GP100 for a while that leaded with everything I tried, except for one load. RCBS 38-150-SWC cast from aire cooled wheel weights + 2%Sn, White Label 50/50 Lube, 16.8 W296, CCI 550. This load shot clean, and I used a cylinder full of them to clean the gun of leading when I tested other loads.
The gun even leaded with gas checked Lee C358-158-SWC bullets from 38 Special levels to mid range 357 Magnums with unique. I got in a tight spot and had to let the gun go before I was able to figure it out completely.
I've fired the load in several other guns, including a buddy's Rossi 92, and it's shot clean in those other guns as well. I surmise that the load is perfectly balanced between alloy hardness/toughness, pressure, and lube.
