Cast these last week before we left town for the holiday. Powder coated this morning. Probably let sit a couple days before sizing. I recently bought the hp pin mold from MP molds. Ive cast loads of the solid mold I have, but thought it would be fun to try the hp version of this. MP 270 saa. This penta hp weighs about 278gr avg. I love the clear powder coat. My solid mold casts about 10 gr higher. I got the best spreads and extreme deviations Ive ever had in single action revolver with the solid bullet deep seated over 6.7gr HP-38. Hoping to get similar results and save a little bit of lead. Im convinced that no single action shooter should balk at powder coating and deep seating. My application is 100% target shooting at this juncture, so casting range scrap, powder coating, and deep seating seem to work well. I love a fresh pile of lead bullets.

Yessir! A fresh pile of cast bullets equals happiness. I see you and I cut our sprues about the same time. I really dont fret over a little torn base for target shooting or general use. I know some people here are really masters at the art and get completely smooth bases but I am just not normally that good. I have that same MP mold and that is a wonderful bullet for all occasions.

I try to make a nicer base, but dont have patience to wait. Its a matter of seconds though. I powder coat them. Ive separated very clean bottoms and loaded them tested against the others. Couldnt see any accuracy differences. I like the edge of the base to be sharp and the grooves all filled out. I used to feel bad posting my bullets because I thought I was doing it wrong. But 2 different members of this forum who are considered experts sent me pc bullets.they had rougher splotchy surfaces and the hollow point meplats were not filled out. I decided that I was doing just fine.

My hunting loads get perfect meplats, bases, and everything else I can control. This includes weight within 1gr of each other.
However, many thousand more are shot each year at stumps, paper, rocks, or whatever that are much less sorted

I like the MP molds best. I use these 3 most. MP 454 308k penta 297gr, mp 454 270saa penta 278gr, mp 454 640 penta 262 gr. My bullets work for me. I dont let other people use them, so it doesnt matter beyond my guns.

My rule of thumb is as I cast if the base isn’t square, if it is rounded at all it goes back in the pot.
From what testing I have done through the years if the base is square and clean it should shoot just fine. If the nose has waves in it, the grease grooves are not perfect whatever imperfections are there it really won’t show up on a target (within reason of course).
Now my best quality hunting stuff I get a bit anal about with everything having to be perfect but that is a handful of bullets vs thousands and general steel clankers and paper puncher bullets.

I still don't really trust the penta for a game bullet. Too easy to knock off a petal on bone causing a curved wound channel.
I still don't use anything bigger than the small pin on pigs and get good results. The cup points however delivered great impact thump and damage, yet drive deep with a respectable wound channel in everything from the 170-ish 357's to the 500's so far.

Try the penta in a 500 with proper alloy and speed. Tell us what you think

I reread my post above and thought maybe I came across in a snarky way. I didn’t intend that. Rather since you do alot of game shooting, I invite you to try penta in the big calibers. I haven’t seen the damage in wound channels from anything but soft nose cast that even remotely compares with a proper alloyed and speed penta cast. I’m talking a slug that expands and holds together Would like to hear your findings

Very nice pile of cast bullets. I like that you went with clear PC instead of a more "festive" color.

HP's are certainly kewl looking, but I've used three of them on deer (MP 357 Carbine @ 1700 fps, MP 429244@ 1050 fps & 45-270 SAA 950 fps) and although they killed the game, penetration was nothing special. They're sure pretty to look at though! Beautiful looking bullet performance as far as expansion. Can you elaborate on just how poor the penetration was please sir. I’m just starting with cast HP’s so trying to gather as much info as I can.
