I shot a hippo in Zimbabwe yrs ago and had the teeth made into a very nice display. Unfortunately, the largest of the tusks split in half and I was wondering if it's worth having them made into grips and if so who would you recommend? Thanks

Split tusks may be able to be saved by taping together and filling with epoxy. I’ve done it many times with hog tusks

I have a set of hippo ivory grips for a Blackhawk and they are great. Talk to Zane at Lone Star Custom Grips.

I'm not the superstitious type, but I could easily use the excuse that they split for a reason - to be made into a set of grips!
I'm not one much for fancy grips, but hippo tusk is just too cool. You'd have one you could handle and one to just look at.

If I had a hippo tusk and wanted it made in to grips my first call is to Zane!

I would consider having it stabilized, as well. Again, talk to Zane.

'TIS SAID THAT THE ENAMEL ON HIPPO IVORY IS SUPER HARD AND DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH, RARE TO SEE HIPPO IVORY GUN GRIPS OR KNIFE SCALES. I HAVE 2 SETS OF HIPPO IVORY, AWAITING FURTHER INFO ON THIS THREAD.

As a lover of exotic materials for grips I'm watching to see where this leads.

These are the hippo tusk grips I have. Since this picture I have had the monogram of three generatoins carved on the right panel and they will go to my son then grandson on an old model 41 that Ben Forkin is working over. The Marlin 41 is part of the same heirloom set.
