That's awesome. Now can someone show how the free spin pawl works? Drilling and tapping the hole is easy, I'm thinking getting the geometry so the hand works to run the cylinder, but doesn't drop in to ratchet with the gate open may require very specific placement. So I'm not going to trial and error to find the perfect spot. If I learn the secret placement I'd do it.

Guess I am back to my original "I'll have to buy one to see how to do it myself," excuse.

That's awesome. Now can someone show how the free spin pawl works? Get Kuhnhausen’s shop manual. It’s similar to the trigger stop but drill it from the barrel end. Adjust the set screw (shown as #54) to hold the hand just inside the window in the receiver so it doesn’t hit the ratchet, thus allowing it to free spin. Didn’t work in a Single Six sized frame. I tried, with Hamilton looking over my shoulder. Alan Harton welded up the extraneous hole I made. Tim

Tim I did not remember seeing that in my Kuhnhausen manual 1&2, only two pages on the Power free spin pawl. So I double checked, then for good measure I flipped every page back to front looking for it. No dice, my version doesn't have that. I did find the trigger over travel stop which I had not noticed, or looked for, before. I still suspect the exact placement of the screw would be pretty important. I'm not worried enough about making a free spin cylinder to trial and error it.

My copy 1&2 doesn't have it either.

I pulled out my copy and also didn’t find it. Kuhnhausen is the only Ruger specific gunsmith book I have so I thought that’s where I found the picture. I’ll keep looking and if I track down the source, I’ll update this. The location of the set screw isn’t too picky. As long as it touches the pawl fairly centered from left to right it is adjustable in and out. In the up and down direction, it just needs to hit under the second “finger” of the hand. Tim Edit: here is an earlier thread with more details and pictures plus input from more knowledgeable folks. Mike454 reminded me then (and again now) that you use existing holes to guide the drill bit to the right spot. No guesswork! Thanks Mike! Free spin.

Free spin. That thread makes it pretty clear, looking at your picture I thought it looked pretty close to lining up with the pawl plunger hole, but You saying it was drilled form the front had me convinced it had to be just a little bit off. That seems pretty simple, and they say it only works on large frames, and maybe mids. I was a little put off by you saying you tried it, and it did not work on your S6. I might just give it a whirl, not that I'm super worried about the free spin feature, but I do like to learn. I know #4-40 oval point set screws come standard down to 1/8" long and seems like the best shape for the application. Not sure if I will post here or put up another thread if I get around to doing this.

If you can get it to work on the single six it will definitely be on my to do list for the 32. It's a pita to load and unload.
