Last spring I sold my reloading outfit and all the accessories that 50 years of reloading, casting and shooting garners. A truckload. I sold this to a man who I have known and mentored for 30+ years. He's an LEO and will be retiring in a couple of years and he wants to develop skills in reloading, particularly rifles.
My background in reloading ammo for rifles is limited. 06, 308 and 7mm-08.
My friend has a 264 Winchester that is a pre 64 Winchester that belonged to his grandfather and is in very good shape with a low round count. He wants to use the 264 Model 70 and take an Elk with it. I've loaded a smattering of 7mmMagnums but no other belted cased cartridges.
So the question to the forum is: Are there known bullet/powder recommendations for 264 Win Mag that go together like hotdogs and mustard, beer and pretzels, and 2400 and 358156 bullets?
Wondering if you all might have a "pet Load" (forgive me Ken Waters) for this cartridge?
Thanks for looking in?
Zeke38
PS: He's not into eroding his barrel.

I have a 264. I bought it new in 1998. I used to shoot 120 gr Barnes X bullets with 7828. Took a bunch of whitetails with that load. More recently, I have shot 140 Nosler accubonds and ballistic tips with discontinued IMR 8133. I took a mule deer buck with the accubond and an antelope with the ballistic tip. Both shots were around 90 yards and both bullets exited. Now if I wanted to take an elk with the 264 I would load either 120 Barnes TTSX or 140 Nosler partition or accubond. As far as powders go, Something like retumbo or ramshot magnum would be what I'd try. Good luck

I have a Ruger m77 tang safety in 264wm that loves 120gr Nosler Ballistic tips and 60gr of IMR4350. I would not recommend this for Elk however, but it's the only load I've run in the gun, it's lightening on whitetails.

I've had good luck with 68.5 grs of Retumbo and Sierra's 142 grain HP BT. My barrel is 27.5" and that combination does an honest 3,200+ fps. Accuracy is outstanding from a Shilen ratchet cut barrel (1:8 twist). -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Thanks guys, this really helps as powder experimentation with different loads is not cheap.
