I turned 50 this year and for several years have been slowly grasping the idea of optics on my revolvers for hunting. But there was a time when I scoffed at those who did this. It was blasphemy to me. Boy did Mother Nature have a lesson waiting for me…
So I’ve accepted that optics, both red dots and scopes are firmly in my future - especially as someone who consumes his thoughts with chasing animals with a revolver in hand. That being said, I still have several wheel guns in their natural state and love shooting them. I do okay when the stars are aligned, the lighting is just right, and the quarry is close. I recently acquired a 6” FA 83/.44 magnum that is begging to remain without optics and become a permanent belt gun. It came equipped with a fiber optic front sight that seems to help some. Maybe I should call Fermin and get his thoughts - his shop is about 30 minutes from my childhood hometown.
Still…I’ve accepted optics but I sure long for the days prior to my bald head and gray whiskers…
*There is no question. Just pondering this morning.

I’ve found that a Trijicon rmr on the 6” FA is a great addition. 😉

Big Bore,, it was like reading my exact thoughts several years ago. As a person with excellent eye sight for so long,, when I finally realized my eyes were telling me that I needed help,, I too resisted. A USPSA match many years ago where I shot very badly, made me accept the fact my eyes needed help. So it started with reading "cheater" glasses. Now,, with prescription bifocals I've accepted the fact that my eyes need help. Several of my handguns now wear some form of optical "help" in one way or another.
Welcome to the old pharts club!

Contender pretty well nailed it. One day you see the front sight, clear and dark blue. Then...hey ! It's fuzzy and gray !

I can still shoot irons but it needs to be a first half of the day thing for me, even with corrective lenses. By mid afternoon my eyes seem to have less ability to focus well especially in poor light, shaded areas, or on not well defined targets. I went and shot the other day around 4-5pm, and turned in very respectable groups with my iron sight guns at 50, but the length of time required for each shot was easily double or triple the time needed previously. When shooting in the AM, the eyes seem fresher and are able to focus quicker and easier on sights and target. I’ve decided iron sight guns will be hunted with in the AM, or wide open areas with good light,…..but still carried for GP field use. The small reflex sights allow hunting with them, and the fiber optic sights allow use as well.

Randy,
Been there, doing that. Good news, it only gets worse. I’ve learned a pair of 1x reading glasses brings that front sight in crisp! I pair has a daily ride in the pocket of my hunting vest - aggravating, but works.

My vision has definitely degraded over the past few years.
My ability to still use irons is entirely due to the combination of a very good optometrist and tri-focal glasses. Yes tri-focal!
I have a pair specially ground where the center plain of the lenses are perfectly focused on the front sight on a 6" barrel. The upper part is no magnification, the bottom part is 25yds. They're safety types, so good for competition and hunting.
I've posted enough targets on here to show they really work.

The last year I shot USPSA I had a prescription lens for my right eye & just a safety lens on the left side so I could see the target clearly, worked pretty good but it was kind of odd walking around.

Randy if you can find one this should help. The Merit optical devices that attach to glasses can clean up, sharpen your vision quite a bit along with specially ground shooting glasses. I shoot silhouette with a 50 some year old man that has several open sight revolver 40's to his credit. He says he couldn't do it without the Merit. They can be hard to find but they are out there.

A friend had glasses made that focused on his front sight.

Progressive lenses solved my sight picture problems. I'm glad that I left bifocals behind years ago. Now my issue is cataracts.
