My first muzzleloader was a TC Hawken that was already fairly old and definitely well used by the time I bought it in my late teens. I hunted with it for many years and always liked it. I ended up with a TC encore that I scoped to hunt the shotgun season in Maryland because it was far more accurate than any slug gun at the time. It was an easy 200 yd gun. And I liked that one as well. However I always really liked and wanted another Hawken. Now that we're in Montana they're season is traditional so the encore has to stay in the safe. I picked up this Hawken which is seemingly unfired. That was my reason for the questions about the Triple Seven powder. This will be fun getting back into this.

Nothing more fun than hunting with a traditional front loader. T/C Hawkens are superb. Always use plain old loose Pyrodex RS in mine. Good luck this season.

I own a 54 cal. that matches that. I own my son has LOL. It should be a 1/48 twist so will shoot round ball or maxi balls well. With a 90gr charge of black powder and a round ball it would usually stop under the skin on the opposite side of deer. It would be nickel size. So if elk is your game or you want two holes try the maxi ball. They are sweet rifles.

I'm pretty happy about the idea of getting back into the Hawken. This one is a 50. Part of me wants to pick up a 54 as well. I really wish they had made this in a 58. They only made the one Big Boar that I'm aware of. I always used the maxi ball with my old Hawken. And I suspect I will gravitate back towards that or some other conical again purely because of the chance to take an elk or bear with it.

I have one of it's cousins, the TC Renegade. Mines a 54. I just dug it out of the safe and started playing with it again. Lots of fun with round balls and holy black 😁

Good for you kevshell. Those rifles are so much fun. Really dependable, really tough. I hunted with one for years now I'm using a Pennsylvainia rifle by Pedersoli. I'm a black powder guy. Have fun!!

Last I heard Bobby Hoyt was still doing rebores and lining barrels. It’s pretty cheap, and he could turn that into a 58 of whatever twist you want. Food for thought, but pretty sweet as is too!

I had one for years but sold it after getting my replacement shoulder in 2016. Bought another recently at our clubs swap meet, a kit build with a beautifully browned barrel for $150 complete with loads of accessories. I'm going to work up a patched ball load for next season. I'll post a pic soon.

I do not hunt with black powder. But I own several rifles, pistols, revolvers, a blunderbus, and a cannon. Still looking for a regulated double rifle and a shotgun.
They are just so much fun.

Good Luck and good hunting with that fine piece that won't be a new-fangled insult to that beautiful country.
