Does anyone have an approximate guideline for cast bullet expansion in light skinned ( deer) animals or the velocity needed to get cast hp expansion in various hardness and calibers, preferably big bore. From 5-10 bhn. Thank you.

Last year I used around half lead to half wheel weights, air cooled in a 480 Ruger bisley with 365gn hp loaded to around 1250+. I punched a good sized Arkansas doe at less than 50yds. The shot was tight behind the shoulder and punched all the way through. It blew chunks of lungs about 15 feet down the lane. The deer jumped, kicked, and ran for about 1 second and piled up.

359-640 gc large hp pins at 14bhn going 1200fps leaves 3" exits in coyote around 50yds. Left a fist sized hole in a doe at 28ft.

I hate it when you guys have to do so much tracking Dick That's why I bought a hp mold for the 500L. First question I was asked about it was "Why?". Softball size exits speak for themselves.

I have to admit it would take quite a chunk of fat to plug that hole.

It just dropped. Lungs were completely minced. They drop with the solid pin too, but the damage with the hp was dramatic. The bullet went on to bust through a three inch maple behind it, also taking it down with the same shot.

Now that had to be a sight watching that deer and the tree behind it fall down!

There's a reason I call myself Bigbore5. Love the 510's.
The deer just dropped. The tree layed over slower. Wish I would have had it on film.

50/50 coww/soww + 2% tin by weight. Cast at 715° by pid control. Beeswax fluxed. Dropped into room temperature water.
Those had aged for a month or so. Bhn 15 on that lot. I've had the same mix get to 17bhn before in a different lot. The softest lot has been 14. Just shows how inconsistent but close enough wheel weights are. Or were anyway.

I think Sixshot had a formula for that?
