I was given a Marlin 30 a s 30/30 JM stamped today. What is a 30 a s? Compared to a 336, 94, or 95? This is only my 3rd Marlin lever action. My other two are a 94 and 95. Guess I need to start gathering 30/30 stuff to. This will be my first 30/30. Justin Update: After doing some research online, the 30as is a 336 with different wood and sights.

Maybe a build for a store brand? Who cares, great buck-buster.

I think they had a walnut stained hardwood stock and forend. No checkering. And a forend cap vs. a barrel band. Still same Marlin quality and usefulness.

"A S?"
JOKINGLY, the first thing that comes to my cynical little mind is that it's a "second" or a "blem," "scratch-n-dent" model.
"A S" stands for AWWW, SH.....?
Now, I don't truly believe that, but if it were mine, that's what I'd tell people. Just for fun.

By the way, that is one neat little rifle there. I don't have to have fancy walnut or even plain walnut. Plastic makes me cringe, but any suitable/serviceable wood on a rifle is fine with me.

At one time their lowest priced 336. Never seen one in any other caliber except for 30-30.

Marlin 30 Series guns were made with beech stocks instead of walnut, smaller forend and a dovetailed in front sight on the barrel instead of a ramp. They were made for the box stores, Sears, Wards, K-Mart, etc. A few years ago I picked up a 30 TK which is a straight stock 30-30 Texan made for KMart with a nicely balanced 18.5" barrel instead of the usual 20 and 2/3rds magazine. The stock had been shortened and butchered but the metal was 99%. Absolutely lucked out in finding a walnut replacement stock and forend on ebay that a friend refinished for me. It took a little fitting but came out nice. Gun came with the padded camo funky looking sling...that I found out later was original to to gun... www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/16448508/fs-marlin-30tk-30-30-carbine

Thanks guys.
Dies and bullets on the way from Midway.
Brass on the way from a member here.
Hopefully it shoots good.

I killed a few deer with one of those before trading it and some cash off in a deal for a contender and 8 barrels. It was a great shooter.

Glenfield sold a 30A. The 30A was my first centerfire rifle. It differed from the Marlin 336 in that it had different sights, and cheaper wood. The 30AS is Marlin's version of the 30A. I believe the 30AS was Marlin's economy model for sale at the big box stores like Wards, Penny's, etc. Much like the plastic stocked 700 ADL's that were made for sale at Walmart.
