Took my old Savage 99F .308 up to the mountain. I put my 7-11 paper coffee cup on a log. Counted 122 paces back to my old jeep. Laid my rifle across a sleeping bag, Peered through the 2x7 Leupold, dry fired a couple shots then put 2 rounds through the cup. Rifle is ready for deer season. I brought 10 rounds to shoot, so I walked 50 steps and put a Gatorade bottle on the ground. put Three rounds into half an inch. The Rifle heats up quick so I plinked a little with a 22 to give it time to cool. Looked around for something to shoot. Spotted 2 Clay pigeon's intact, down into a little valley. Maybe 50 yards away. Did a couple dry fires on one, Loaed The rifle fired, and when I came down out of recoil there was only one clay pigeon. The 2nd one was angled and a much tougher target, at the angle. 1st shot was awful. 2nd was real close 3rd made it Disappear. Offhanded at 50 yards a clay bird on its edge is a tough target, but I missed it twice. Still, I would not want to be a Deer within 300 yards of me and my .308. This is a fine, fine classic deer rifle, Light accurate powerful. Great balance. It Shoots 150 grain bullets like a bolt gun. It heats up quick and then accuracy falls off. But that is not a problem when hunting. I would love to find another old Savage 99F only in 300 Savage. And Or a Pre 64 Featherweight in .308 Had one years ago , and for some reason, traded it away...tj

If you plan to hand load, I would get the 300 Savage. The 308 brass stretches and two loadings is about all you get. ...tj

Have had a few 99s over the years; a .300 Savage and a .250; the latter being our favorite. Always wanted a 99 take down carbine in .250 but never found one I could afford; however, the .250 Savage (.250-3000) became my go to deer cartridge. Have a couple of Ruger 77s so chambered, a custom LW on a Sako action, and an Ultra Light arms Model 20 .250. Re-barreled a model 7 Remington to .250 for our son years ago also; the grand daughter now uses that. Some day I'll run into a 99 TD carbine!

I had 2 250/3000s Never shot game with either. Both shot a 90 grain Sierra HP well under an inch. But Thats a Varmint bullet, and I could not get either to shoot a bullet I trusted on big mule deer very well. ZI have Pretty much decided to stick with 30 caliber stuff anymore. except my AR. ...tj

I had a 99E in 308 that I messed with for a few years but never got the accuracy that I wanted out of it. I was convinced that the forend was the problem and was planning to pillar bed it but someone wanted it more than I did so I let it go. I loved the look of it, it's history and the way it carried for a southern whitetail gun.

I have a fairly pretty 308 Savage 99. I have never fired it. Nice wood, color case hardened lever... the rear sight ramp or whatever is missing but the front sight shade is still there.

You should give it a try, I shot mine again today. With 165 grain Hornady. Not quite as good as the 150 grain Cor locked. But I I wanted to hunt Rlk withy my .308, the Hornady load would be fine...

My .308 99 seems to be an older style with the straight stock, cartridge counter and rotary mag. It is the Blackest walnut I have ever seen on a factory rifle. Don't know any thing about it except it needs to see more daylight.

Not sure but I think that is an A model. With a tang safety, that makes it a later model. Nice quick handling deer slayer...tj
