Don’t clean them often. I only clean my guns when they quit shooting. I never really remove the copper I’ve laid in. I have 308s with 700 or more rounds that still shoot .1-.15” groups. I’ll clean them when they stop. If you do clean, shoot about 10-15 to really foul it in and it should shoot fine at that point. Just don’t go crazy cleaning. On our 416s, we see velocity increases for about 70 rounds. On the smaller calibers, we see 338s go close to 100 rounds before the velocity stops increasing and it truly “breaks in”. With a hunting gun, it’s not that big a deal since you aren’t shooting 30 plus rounds during a match. But I’d get a few more down it and it should settle in.

I'm just following the break-in process. I know some think it's voodoo and a waste of time. Some are thorough believer in it. That said the 300 win mag drove me nuts till I figured out it shot best dirty. Since then I've not cleaned it. Of all people I think you would know best. :-)

It’s still stacking them at over a mile BUT…I think I was pushing my luck last weekend 🤣🤣 my problem is lately I don’t have time to get them out and refoul after cleaning before the match with work/travel. But I’ll have to make time this month one afternoon. 🤣🤣

That rifle should have a pretty smooth barrel from the factory. When the best shooters and barrel makers are mixed on a recommendation- in this case barrel break in- then the good news is you probably won't go wrong no matter what you do in the first handful of shots.
Waiting until the gun has 100 rounds for the barrel to settle in is a little painful when barrel life is 1000 rounds and shots are $3-4 each. Consume 10% of your barrel life, settle on a load, THEN send in for the CDS dial on that Leupold. That's the price you pay for horsepower.
I think if you have to choose between a cleaned gun with 1 or 2 fouling shots or a fouled barrel, in a hunting gun 100% run it as a fouled barrel. Much simpler.
Anyway, you're off to a great start with that group.
Love the Dustin 45!

kevshell: SEMI-HIJACK HERE, I TOO HAVE FOUND THE 250gr RNFP AS COMMERCIALLY CAST BY MANY COMPANIES TO BE A VERY ACCURATE BULLET IN MOST 45 COLT REVOLVERS. WHAT "TIER" OF 45 COLT LOADS DOES 8grs OF 231 AND THE 250 RNFP GET INTO? I USE THAT BULLET IN MY COLT SAA LOADS, MY S&W LOADS AND MY RUGER LOADS. ALSO A VERY GOOD KILLER.

This is with eight grains of 231 which is a which is closer to unique than bullseye. To be honest with you I really don't know what level it is offhand. I got this load a long time ago straight from John's website. I knew it was safe in the Blackhawks and never really cared to know at the time what level it was. I'm guessing going back in referencing that one article that Pearce did several years ago my unearth your answer.

My deer rifle is a Nosler M48 7-08 with the mountain carbon style stock, which I like a lot. I never did the break-in procedure. I've been cleaning it every 2 or 3 range trips, and it doesn't seem to care one way or the other. Never had any issues with the first shot regardless. Maybe because 7-08 is so tame? So far it's been all factory ammo for me, and the only thing it hasn't liked is the new Remington Core-Lokt's, which it hated. It loves the Nosler ammo, which I guess isn't surprising. That stuff is sure getting pricey though. I stocked up on the Trophy Grade 140g Accubonds when they were still well under $2 per round. Makes me cringe to look at the price now.

I do love the "bobbed" Bisley grip, but what am I seeing or not seeing on that loading gate?
8 gr. of 231 under the 250 RN should give about 960 fps from a 5" bbl.

I think what you're seeing is an open loading gate. It's also a scalloped loading gate. Maybe that's what's throwing you off. I was shooting at a public range and I will typically leave the loading gate open to show the gun is safe. Even though it's not as surefire as a bolt action opened up, a single shot broke open, etc.

Thanks, Kev, it was the scalloped gate . . . I'd never seen one before. Looks good!

I took my wife back to the range today so she could put some rounds downrange prior to the upcoming elk hunt. This is the Nosler 48 in 28 Nosler. I'm pretty happy with her 200 yard group pictured here. She asked if that was good. I told her it'll probably be better than half the men in camp. And the last picture had the mulies wandering around the berna while we were shooting. They didn't have a care in the world. Let's hope we see and connect with some bulls soon.

One last trip to the range before the elk trip. Although it's only 2 shots at 200 this rifle will shoot. It was still a touch high and right but that's corrected now.
