I never was a fan of the 30-06 for a long time. That was just because everyone had one and I wanted something different... Then my oldest son was given a Rem 720? In 30-06 for his 12th birthday. I thought it would be a good idea for us to have interchangeable ammo while hunting, so I picked up a M98 Mauser 06. Without too much trouble I was able to dial in a load that fit both rifles and shot sub 1" groups. Since then, I've taken deer, hogs and Elk with the tired old 06. It just plain works. I guess there was a reason that Dad carried an 06. Your load with the 178 ELD-X @ 2900! Is pushing almost 300 win performance.

The old '06 really shines if you reload. There is a reason it is one of the most used cartridges in the country, it just works. I have had a Remington 700BDL since it was new when I was 14 (56 now), it has been my only hunting rifle and it has taken countless deer, a few bears, antelope and elk. It's very capable if you do your part, have had a difficult time justifying a bigger boomer.
It is very hard for me to set aside this old friend as I pick-up the SA for my hunting chores now, but I am up to the challenge.

The 30-06 is the first rifle I ever built on a Mauser action. I built it in 2001 and I have put thousands of rounds through the barrel. That Adams and Bennett barrel that cost me 100 dollars delivered (Midway sale) has been a constant companion for any serious hunting. I use Sierra 108 Pro Hunter bullets but not sure I am pushing them quite to 2900, but probably not far off. I had to look up the bullet that you are using, but I bet your load is quite a bit flatter shooting than mine. I might have to get a box and try them out. Very interesting.
